The Healthy Bones, Healthy Aging Challenge

From family to local leaders to our future selves, we all know aging community members that we want to help live healthier and longer lives. Preventing bone fractures is an important part of this—maintaining mobility and independence to keep dementia at bay and allow older adults to participate fully in social life.

For older adults, many fractures are dismissed as simply part of the aging process or a result of clumsiness. However, one in two women and one in four men over age 50 will break a bone due to osteoporosis in their lifetime. Four out of five fracture patients are not diagnosed or treated for their osteoporosis. After a first fracture, the risk of having another increases by 85%.

That’s why we are exploring creative solutions from different spaces that connect fractures to osteoporosis in the journey after an older adult’s first fracture—from hospital to recovery—to ensure better quality of life for our loved ones.
We are excited to hear your ideas and hope you jump into the Challenge. All Top Ideas will be invited to participate in a design sprint trip, present at a high profile event in the field, and have their idea considered for piloting with a health system. Honorable Mentions will receive a microgrant of a $200 donation to a nonprofit of their choice, and have the option to take an IDEO U On Demand Class of their choice.
