April's Queens' Mentoring Moment

Discernment Pt.3

We are continuing in the third part of our series on discernment. I believe this particular lesson is extremely important because of the times we are living in. There are people in churches and in ministry leadership who will try to lead people astray. That is why it is necessary to study the Bible for yourself and to examine whether or not what is being preached or taught lines up with God's Word.

The devil is at work in the world causing people to be deceived. Even within the walls of churches, people are being deceived and pulled away by doctrines that are against what the Bible says.
Matthew 7:15 “"Beware of false prophets who come disguised as harmless sheep but are really vicious wolves”

You have to have the Spirit of Truth on the inside of you to check your spirit when you hear false teaching or doctrine.

John 14:17 NLT "He is the Holy Spirit, who leads into all truth. The world cannot receive him, because it isn't looking for him and doesn't recognize him. But you know him, because he lives with you now and later will be in you."

Matthew 10:16 “Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.”
1 Timothy 4:1 "The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons."

Acts 20:29-30 NLT & 31 NIV “I know that false teachers, like vicious wolves, will come in among you after I leave, not sparing the flock. Even some men from your own group will rise up and distort the truth in order to draw a following. So be on your guard! Remember that for three years I never stopped warning each of you night and day with tears.”
2 Corinthians 11:1-6 NLT “I hope you will put up with a little more of my foolishness. Please bear with me. For I am jealous for you with the jealousy of God himself. I promised you as a pure bride to one husband—Christ. But I fear that somehow your pure and undivided devotion to Christ will be corrupted, just as Eve was deceived by the cunning ways of the serpent. You happily put up with whatever anyone tells you, even if they preach a different Jesus than the one we preach, or a different kind of Spirit than the one you received, or a different kind of gospel than the one you believed. But I don’t consider myself inferior in any way to these “super apostles” who teach such things. I may be unskilled as a speaker, but I’m not lacking in knowledge. We have made this clear to you in every possible way.”
12-15 “But I will continue doing what I have always done. This will undercut those who are looking for an opportunity to boast that their work is just like ours. These people are false apostles. They are deceitful workers who disguise themselves as apostles of Christ. But I am not surprised! Even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. So it is no wonder that his servants also disguise themselves as servants of righteousness. In the end they will get the punishment their wicked deeds deserve.”

The Word of God has given us plenty of warning to be aware of what is taking place all around us. We are not only responsible for making sure we are not deceived by false teaching, but we must warn others. We must encourage others in the body of Christ to keep God's Word as their standard and not to compromise or be swayed by the pull of the world.
1. Have you ever been in a church or ministry event where you heard false teaching?

2. What did you do when you heard false teaching?

3. Are you willing and able to explain the truth of God's Word to someone who is being deceived?

4. Do you do the necessary study after you have heard a sermon or Bible study to see if what you heard lines up with the Word?
