Putting Our Flesh Under: Our Appetite

This month we will finish up with our series regarding “Putting Our Flesh Under”. I find it interesting that we are a few days from the Thanksgiving holiday and are going to be dealing with the topic of “Our Appetite”. So often the Thanksgiving holiday is a time when people eat more than what is needed and it is a prelude to the eating that takes place during the Christmas holiday.

Just like we need to live being led by the Holy Spirit in the areas of our life dealing with our mouth, our sight, and our hearing, we also need to be led by the Spirit in the area of our appetite. There is nothing wrong with having a healthy appetite, but the problem comes when the appetite takes an inordinate position in our lives.

We do not want to get to a place where our appetite dictates the type of life we will have.  When your appetite causes you to make decisions that are detrimental to your health and wellbeing, then you know you have an issue. We must be purposeful in our decision making and allowing the Holy Spirit to lead us as we navigate this holiday season.

The Word of God gives us some examples of what happens when the appetite is in control and how we should live being led by the Spirit, instead of by our appetite.

Proverbs 23:1-2 CEV
“When you are invited to eat with a king, use your best manners. Don't go and stuff yourself! That would be just the same as cutting your throat.”
Philippians 3:19 GNT
“They are going to end up in hell, because their god is their bodily desires. They are proud of what they should be ashamed of, and they think only of things that belong to this world.”
Romans 16:18 BSB
“For such people are not serving our Lord Christ, but their own appetites. By smooth talk and flattery they deceive the hearts of the naive.”
Galatians 5:17 BSB
“For the flesh craves what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are opposed to one another, so that you do not do what you want.”
Romans 8:5 BSB
“Those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh; but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit.”

Enjoy the holiday season, but do not allow your appetite to dictate your decision making regarding what you will do. Allow the Spirit to lead you and you will have a great time this holiday season!

Questions:

1. Are you allowing your appetite to do your decision making for you?

2. Do you ever feel guilty after the holidays because of what you have eaten?

3. Do you consider your health and well being when making decisions about what to eat?

4. Have you ever asked the Holy Spirit to lead you as you go into the holiday occasions, parties or dinners?
