UPDATE ON 8TH GRADE MATH
We have a new 8th grad Algebra Teacher Ms. Hare who is supporting all Algebra students. Ms. Hare has 10 years of teaching experience with Oakland students and we are very excited and lucky to have her. She is the lead teacher and Ms. Thacher is in the room as well daily to support her!
Also on the 8th grade math front: We continue to have two teachers — Ms. Baty and Ms. Geddis (Ms. G) supporting all 8th graders in math.
Many thanks to the parent volunteers and school staff who made the Claremont tours happen this year. We hosted over 500 visitors (adults and students), and did a great job communicating out into the community all the great things that are happening at Claremont. A special thank you to Laura Mytels who organized and found all the volunteers. YOU ARE AMAZING, LAURA!

ANGIE THOMAS, AUTHOR OF 'THE HATE YOU GIVE' COMES TO TECH
Angie Thomas, the bestselling, award-winning author of "The Hate U Give," presents her highly anticipated second novel, "On the Come Up", at Oakland Tech's Auditorium on Monday, February 18, 3-5 p.m. (Note, this is a holiday).
We are 1 of 15 sites hosting Angie Thomas's National tour. Insightful, unflinching, and full of heart, "On the Come Up," an ode to hip-hop, is the story of fighting for your dreams, even as the odds are stacked against you; and about how, especially for young black people, freedom of speech isn't always free. Thomas will be in conversation with MK Asante, award-winning writer, filmmaker, hip-hop artist, and distinguished professor.
The cost of the event for the general public is $25. Buy tickets here.
SPECIAL OFFER: OUSD Library Services is looking for people willing to fund $160 or more (and ask 5 of their friends to do the same) to support 10 students. For $160, 10 students will receive:
• a copy of Angie Thomas' new book "On the Come Up," cover price $18.99
• a copy of MK Asante's memoir, "Buck," value $10.99
• an opportunity to meet MK and Angie in person and to get their books signed by the author
See our District Library News for how to donate to our program to support this and other exciting literacy events for our students.
The event is sponsored by Oakland Unified School District Library Services and Mrs. Dalloway’s Bookstore.
