Good News for Santa Cruz!

It feels like we just sent a newsletter out, but so many good things have been happening this month that we simply had to share the news. From magazine articles to online documentaries and artist endorsements, Santa Cruz Guitar Company has been getting a lot of love. It sure is turning out to be a banner year in celebration of our 35th Anniversary! We're going to have big news in the coming months about our 35th Anniverary party this October, and we hope you all will get invovled and celebrate with us. Stay tuned for more info on that, and in the meantime, enjoy all the good news below!

'A Guitar Imagined' by Scott Law

We here at Santa Cruz Guitar Company are so proud of the artists who endorse us. The fact that they are phenomenal players goes without saying, and we truly enjoy their good company. The stars aligned when Scott Law called us up a few years ago, with the hopes that a custom Santa Cruz Dreadnought would be guitar he's always dreamt of. He recently wrote an article for The Fretboard Journal describing his acquisition process, and what it was like to work with Santa Cruz on building his ultimate acoustic. Although not available online, we highly recommend picking up a copy at your local newstand. We can't thank Scott enough for sharing his story with the guitar public... hopefully the custom D/PW he just bought will help show our appreciation.

Here are some excerpts from the article: "The thing that struck me most about getting to know Richard was his enthusiasm for getting to know me. He challenged my concept of what I actually wanted. He got right in there with me and listened to how I played, noting repertoire, picking style and left-hand touch. We easily developed a common language. His feedback helped me zero in on my choice. It helped me visualize and then describe, in sonic detail, the guitar in my imagination... Many guitars have come and gone. This one stays."

Kurt Allison Receives Donated Santa Cruz DH

American Songwriter Magazine organized The Big Gear Giveback at Summer NAMM last year, to help get donated instruments into the hands of Nashville players who lost their gear in the flood. Santa Cruz Guitar Company donated a DH to the cause, and it ended up in the hands of Kurt Allison, guitar player in Jason Aldean's band. American Songwriter just posted a great article on Kurt's experience with the Nashville flood and acquiring his new Santa Cruz guitar. You can read the article here. Many thanks to American Songwriter for facilitating this donation. "... when you pick up the Santa Cruz and play it you know you’re dealing with a whole different instrument. The sound acoustically is much richer. I wasn’t used to that, having that good of wood and richness in the sound of it. I was actually really stunned that it sounded like that. They’re beautiful. My first impression was much more than I had anticipated." - Kurt Allison, on receiving his new DH.

Our Cowboy Singer wins Premier Guitar Gear Award & Editor's Pick at NAMM

Charles Saufley of Premier Guitar Magazine wrote a beautiful review of our Cowboy Singer, the Don Edward's 50th Anniversary Commemorative Signature Model Guitar. New this year, the guitar has been getting a ton of attention, which makes us so happy, as Don Edwards is truly a legendary player, singer, songwriter and historian who deserves as many accolades as his horse can carry. In addition to Mr. Saufley's stellar review, the guitar won a coveted 'Premier Gear Award' from the magazine. You can view the full review online by clicking here, and it is also in the May print edition on newstands now.

A couple of excerpts: "That Santa Cruz gets such a wide spectrum of sound and projection out of a small-bodied mahogany acoustic speaks volumes about Hoover's extra-mile manufacturing methods, which include thin nitrocellulous finishes and time consuming, tap-tuning of tops... It's the Cowboy Singer's broad and multifaceted sonic signature that makes this Santa Cruz special. It has superb and unusual balance and dynamic range for an all-mahogany body - a distinction that's certainly attributable to Richard Hoover's holistic and exacting approach to guitar building."

Photo Essay with Wired.com

The good people of Wired.com came out to Santa Cruz recently to document a tour of our shop with Richard Hoover. The result is a gorgeous photo essay entitled 'Building the Guitar You'll Keep' that gives an indepth look into our bench style build process and what steps our 13 luthiers take to hand craft each individual guitar. The article, which also features one of our beloved artists, James Nash of the Waybacks, can be read by clicking here. We're grateful to Wired.com for presenting such an honest look at what goes on in our little shop in Santa Cruz.

SCGC at MerleFest and The Cowboy Festival!

Boy did we have fun out at MerleFest in Wilkesboro, NC and the Cowboy Festival down in Santa Clarita, CA. Down at MerleFest, we had great artist representation, with Doc Watson, James Nash, Tony Rice, the Wailin' Jennys and Bill Nershi. Zac Brown stopped by our booth and bought a Mandocello!

The Cowboy Fest was held on Gene Autry's Melody Ranch... the true-to-life western movie set where shows like Gunsmoke, The Lone Ranger and more recently Deadwood were filmed is a treasure - you feel like you literally stepped back into the old west. Don Edwards performed all three days to throngs of adoring fans, and found some time to stop by the Santa Cruz booth and show off his new Cowboy Singer Signature Model.
