It is with gratitude and excitement that we write to you to share about this beautiful Coalición that has come together over the past year to weave a tapestry of many colors from many directions that is here to uplift and support our beloved Latino/a/x community to thrive and live with dignity, peace and justice.

We want to share with you in this newsletter a taste of what we've been able to accomplish together over the past year, as well as about who we are, how we got here, and what we're visioning and joining forces to cultivate.

The story of Coalicion Fortaleza is simple.

We do this work for the love of our land, our people and the future generations of all life.

If you know the Rogue Valley and the beauty that exists in this magical little place, then you can surely understand the passion and heart with which we are fighting to restore and protect this place for our community.

We grew up here.
This is the place where we learned to be human.

We know that to be born and raised in the same community is a gift and privilege not many people get to experience in their life, and though many of our families migrated here from other parts of the world,

This is the place we call home.

La historia de coalición Fortaleza es sencilla.

Hacemos este trabajo por el amor a nuestra tierra, a nuestra gente y a las generaciones futuras de toda la vida.
Si conoce el Valle del Rogue y la belleza que existe en este pequeño lugar mágico, entonces seguramente puede entender la pasión y el corazón con los que estamos luchando para restaurar y proteger este lugar para nuestra comunidad.

We are on stolen land.
The Rogue Valley wasn’t always known by that name.
Less than 200 years ago, this place was home to many indigenous people and tribes including the Takelma, the Cow Creek and the Shasta people.

Before we can talk about our Latinx community, our history, our hardships, and the traumatic removal of our communities by wildfires, we want to first acknowledge the native communities and families that were violently displaced from these lands by colonization.

El Valle Rogue no siempre era conocido por ese nombre.
Hace menos de 200 años, este lugar era el hogar de muchas tribus, incluyendo los Takelma, los Cow Creek y los Shasta.

Life hasn’t always been easy for our community but it always felt beautiful. The difficulties that sprouted after the Almeda Fire on September 8th of 2020 surely made things a lot more difficult for us.

La vida no siempre ha sido fácil para nuestra comunidad, pero siempre se sentía hermosa. Las dificultades que surgieron después del incendio Almeda el 8 de septiembre del 2020 seguramente hicieron las cosas mucho más difíciles para nosotros.

Over 2,800 households were scorched down. 70% of those structures were mobile homes, and our little towns of Talent and Phoenix accounted for over 60% of the entire structural losses due to wildfires reported by the state of Oregon.

Achievements

Since the Almeda Fire swept through our towns, disproportionately impacting BIPOC folks, poor white families, veterans and senior citizen communities, some of our proudest accomplishments include that we:

Successfully mobilized community efforts to push the city of Talent to offer translation at their meetings
Convened an inter-generational council of impacted families to collectively set priorities for redistributing resources amongst those most impacted
Fundraised and collectively redistributed over $110,000 dollars to our most impacted families and individuals based on the priorities set by the inter-generational council.
Initiated a community-driven survey by and for the people in partnership with CASA of Oregon to collect our own data to better advocate for our communities housing needs.
Worked with Mi Valle Mi Hogar and Post Growth Institute to merge our efforts to create a fully women of color-led non-profit
Worked in partnership with PeoplesHub to create a culturally relevant bilingual Emergency Preparedness Training to local and impacted community leaders and families
Offered our bilingual Emergency Preparedness Training to community based organizations across the state of Oregon to increase our collective resilience
