One of our favorite times of year is the transition between spring to summer. The flowers are blooming and you can hear the birds singing and nesting. We went for a hike this past weekend to Table Rock for the kick-off of the Climate Survival Youth Fellowship in partnership with PeoplesHub and as we saw the birds flying over us towards their cozy nests with offerings on their beaks we couldn’t help but think “Wow! What a beautiful life birds live!” With the youth, we learned about the indigenous history of the Rogue Valley and thought it was beautiful to look out onto the valley and see the mountains, rivers and green fields knowing that before Oregon was a state, humans lived on this land freely and were provided for by the land and their own community.
Una de nuestras épocas favoritas del año es la transición entre la primavera y el verano. Las flores están floreciendo y puedes escuchar el canto y el anidamiento de los pájaros. Fuimos de excursión el fin de semana pasado a Table Rock para el lanzamiento de la Academia Juvenil de Supervivencia Climática y cuando vimos a los pájaros volando sobre nosotros hacia sus acogedores nidos con ofrendas en sus picos, no pudimos evitar pensar "¡Guau! ¡Qué hermosa vida viven los pájaros!” con los jóvenes, aprendimos sobre la historia indígena de Rogue Valley y pensamos que era hermoso mirar hacia el valle y ver las montañas, los ríos y los campos verdes sabiendo que antes de que Oregón fuera un estado, los humanos vivían en esta tierra libremente y eran proporcionado por la tierra y su propia comunidad.
We deserve to rest peacefully in the safety of our own homes like the birds. We want a life like the birds who fly freely and the ancestors who made their homes and villages and worked for their own well being and that of their people. It’s unbelievable to see how cruelty has been normalized and legalized. Markets and economies have fogged our understanding of what basic human rights are but of course, if humans feel entitled to own and sell the world's most sacred elements like land and water, it’s not surprising to see humans with more money and political power or authority feel entitled to determine the future of the livelihood of other human beings.
In the middle of a housing crisis and while we still fight to recover from the #AlmedaFire, two families of color in our neighborhoods that survived the wildfires have gotten evicted from the safety of their homes in the past couple of months for minor violations. Let it be known that evictions are a death sentence and one of the top strategies investors use to purge poor people out of prime real estate lands. This is how developers make way for new development projects that will attract those who can pay higher rent rates, we’ve seen this in big cities and our rural communities are no different.
Merecemos descansar en paz en la seguridad de nuestros propios hogares como los pájaros. Queremos una vida como la de los pájaros que vuelan libres y una vida como la de los ancestros que hicieron sus casas y pueblos y trabajaron por su propio bienestar y el de su gente. Es increíble ver cómo se ha normalizado y legalizado la crueldad. Los mercados y las economías han empañado nuestra comprensión de lo que son los derechos humanos básicos pero, por supuesto, si los humanos se sienten con derecho a poseer y vender los elementos más sagrados del mundo, como la tierra y el agua, no es sorprendente ver a los humanos con más dinero y poder político o autoridad sentirse derecho a determinar el futuro de los medios de subsistencia de otros seres humanos.
En medio de una crisis de vivienda y mientras aún luchamos por recuperarnos del #AlmedaFire, dos familias de color en nuestros vecindarios que sobrevivieron a los incendios forestales han sido desalojadas de la seguridad de sus hogares en los últimos meses por violaciones menores. Que se sepa que los desalojos son una sentencia de muerte y una de las principales estrategias que utilizan los inversores para expulsar a las personas pobres de las mejores tierras inmobiliarias. Así es como los desarrolladores dan paso a nuevos proyectos de desarrollo que atraerán a aquellos que pueden pagar tarifas de alquiler más altas, lo hemos visto en las grandes ciudades y nuestras comunidades rurales no son diferentes.
No matter how much housing continues to be treated as a privilege and commodity, Housing is a human right.
In 1948 the United States signed the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, acknowledging that housing is a human right. Yet we look around the Rogue Valley and are painfully aware of how this memo has not reached the ears of landlords, investors, or state and federal officials. On this land, homelessness didn’t exist 200 years ago and although the gap between the rich and poor has existed for centuries, before the 1980’s we didn’t have millions of people facing housing insecurity. Community governance is the goal and we know this work won’t be easy, but we dream of returning to the old times when communities and the people living in them had full control and power over their housing and well-being. We want our community to be like the birds and fly freely and peacefully knowing we will have a warm and cozy nest to come home to and we will need everyone's support to make it possible.
Por mucho que la vivienda siga siendo tratada como un privilegio y una comodidad, la vivienda es un derecho humano.
En 1948, los Estados Unidos firmaron la Declaración Universal de los Derechos Humanos reconociendo que la vivienda es un derecho humano, sin embargo, miramos alrededor de Rogue Valley y somos dolorosamente conscientes de cómo este memorando no ha llegado a los oídos de los propietarios, inversionistas o funcionarios estatales y federales. En esta tierra, la falta de vivienda no existía hace 200 años y aunque la brecha entre ricos y pobres ha existido durante siglos, antes de la década de 1980 no teníamos millones de personas enfrentando la inseguridad de vivienda. We are so lucky to announce we’ve hired another incredible young woman who aside from having all of the qualifications to lead this work is also born and raised in the Rogue Valley in the Phoenix-Talent area.

Somos muy afortunados de anunciar que hemos contratado a otra increíble joven que, además de tener todas las calificaciones para liderar este trabajo, también nació y se crió en Rogue Valley en el área de Phoenix-Talent.
Celines Garcia is a first-generation Xicana whose parents have contributed to maintaining the largest local economic forces in the Rogue Valley such as agriculture and forestry. She is bilingual and bicultural and graduated from the University of Oregon with a degree in General Social Science with a focus in crime law and society and two minors in legal studies and business administration. She comes to Coalición Fortaleza with a fierce passion to lead the recovery and advocacy efforts and is well equipped to advocate for her community and push forward our communities needs, priorities and demands. Prior to joining as the Lead community Organizer, she served as a Social Worker for the State of Oregon and understands the intricacies of policies at the state level, which we know will fortify her efforts to advance our mission.
Celines García es una Xicana de primera generación cuyos padres han contribuido a mantener las mayores fuerzas económicas locales en Rogue Valley, como la agricultura y la silvicultura. Ella es bilingüe y bicultural y se graduó de la Universidad de Oregón con una licenciatura en Ciencias Sociales Generales con un enfoque en derecho penal y sociedad y dos asignaturas secundarias en estudios legales y administración de empresas. Ella viene a Coalición Fortaleza con una feroz pasión por liderar los esfuerzos de recuperación y defensa y está bien equipada para defender a su comunidad e impulsar las necesidades, prioridades y demandas de nuestra comunidad. This Memorial Day Weekend, the Ashland World Music Festival (AWMF) invites the public to a three day event featuring live in-person storytelling, music, dance & visual art offerings from cultures around the world. The festival features culture-bearing performers, visual artists, and teachers at live events and a weekend of SoundWalks through Ashland’s downtown city-scape.
Este fin de semana de Memorial Day Weekend, el Ashland World Music Festival (AWMF) invita al público a un evento en vivo de tres días de narración de cuentos, música, danza y artes visuales de culturas de todo el mundo. El festival cuenta con artistas, artistas visuales y maestros portadores de cultura en eventos en vivo y un fin de semana de SoundWalks a través del paisaje urbano del centro de Ashland.
All AWMF events are produced in collaboration between Rogue World Music (RWM) and the Ashland Parks & Recreation Commission (APRC) and are free. On Saturday May 28th at 5:30pm, join us for an intimate evening of music and stories of “home”. Storytellers for the evening include visiting musicians and local community members. The night will be MC’d by our Executive Director, Erica Alexia Ledesma. Come learn and listen to the birth story of CF’s movement and the community that has raised these strong women of color leaders. The event will be held at ScienceWorks Hands-On Museum 1500 E. Main St. Ashland, OR.
