March 2012 Newsletter

A look back at 2011

Welcome to the first newsletter of 2012. Jeanefer had a very busy 2011, which included choreographing for the Commonwealth Youth Games, making a new dance film and working with and training some fantastic artists through East London Dance’s Artist Bank. We thought we would give you a quick round up of last year, which culminated in a flurry of activity, and then look forward to the exciting projects coming up in 2012.

Westfield Stratford City in partnership with East London Dance presents Dancing Voices
Jeanefer teamed up with film-maker Jevan Chowdhury to create Dancing Voices, a short dance film that creatively showcases multiple dance styles across iconic sites in East London. This new film has received over 20,000 hits on YouTube! Why not take a look and leave a comment?

Artist Bank / Mentoring
Jeanefer has been mentoring artists thorugh East London Dance's various programmes and its celebrated Artist Bank. The final session of 2012 took place just before Christmas with Jeanefer bringing together and working with over 50 artists from across the UK. The programme included sessions on Creative Teaching Strategies and Working in Outdoor Settings.

London 2012

Excitingly, 2011 was completed by Jeanefer being selected as one of the Mass Movement Co-ordinators for the Ceremonies of this year's London 2012 Olympic Games. This brought together her experience of working on mass participation projects and large scale events as the team started auditioning for performers.

Tomorrow's Men start young

Jeanefer is currently leading a Raising Attainment project at Barnes Primary School in Richmond. Throughout the spring term a group of boys have been selected to work with Jeanefer and a male dance artist to develop their creative skills in order to help them re-engage with their learning. If you would like to run a similar project then please get in touch to discuss further.

Look Before You Leap: an advice and rights guide for choreographers

Jeanefer was invited to impart her experience as a choreographer and Rayne Fellow to contribute to the second edition of Dance UK's publication, Look Before You Leap. First published 17 years ago, the new edition ensures this vital resource is still relevant for today's choreographers. For more information and to order your copy visit

Big Dance North West

As if Jeanefer wasn't keeping herself busy enough in 2012 she will also be working as a Choreographic Consultant for Merseyside Dance Initiative who are leading on the Big Dance North West celebrations. Over the next few weeks Jeanefer will be heading to Liverpool to work with Lead Artist, Lisi Perry and train 25 artists from around the region. These artists will then head back to their areas to teach sections of the choreography to their local groups. All the participants (expected to be over 1200!)  will then come together to rehearse during Big Dance Dance week, with a final performance taking place in a large public space (TBC) on 14th July 2012.
