MCBC-only tour: Join us on an exclusive tour of the new veterans health clinic
Attention, MCBC members: Join us for a special members-only tour of the new veterans health facility this month! Monterey County Business Council member Otto Construction says the new VA clinic is nearly complete. This is a marvelous opportunity to get an exclusive tour of the facility before it opens to the public. Our special members-only tour of the Major General William H. Gourley VA/DOD Outpatient Clinic will take place Tuesday, Dec. 20, from 5-6:30 p.m. 

"This is a great step in bringing the best health care to Central Coast service members and retired Veterans,” said Congressman Sam Farr. "By bringing the two departments together under one roof, we can seamlessly treat an individual throughout their career and into retirement. This design will hopefully become the model for future joint clinics throughout the country.”

The three-story, 146,000-gross-square-foot facility will provide care for approximately 80,000 military members and veterans. The new facility will provide primary care and specialty care including medical/surgical subspecialty clinics, mental health care, audiology, physical and occupation therapy, ancillary and diagnostic service. The clinic will replace the VA Palo Alto Health Care System’s existing clinic to meet the growing healthcare need for veterans in the region. It will be only the second fully integrated VA/DoD facility in the nation. Learn more about the project here.

Monterey Bay PTAC, Fresno SBA to co-host free "Sources Sought" webinar
The Monterey Bay Procurement Technical Assistance Center will host "Responding to Sources Sought," a free webinar from 10-10:30 a.m. Dec. 9. To be led by Monterey Bay PTAC Program Manager Teri Williams, the webinar is the second in a three-part series of webinars held in conjunction with the Fresno SBA.  

For those unfamiliar with the term, a "Sources Sought" is not an actual bid or proposal solicitation; instead, it's a solicitation of interest. Think of "Sources Sought" as market research being conducted by a government agency to determine what the capabilities and interests of the marketplace are.

Just ask Richard Buaya, a PTAC success story. His Monterey-based company specializes in facilities support and public relations. It's also a PTAC client.
In early 2014, Buaya Pacific Management was awarded a $2.3-million-dollar contract to provide administrative services for the Naval Postgraduate School. At the time, it was the biggest contract the four-year-old company had signed, and the PTAC’s assistance was instrumental in providing direction for the intended services that they offer. Read more

Monterey County election results certified
The final numbers are in, according to the Monterey County Elections Department. Certified last Friday, the Nov. 8 election results show that a record 137,102 voters cast ballots in last month’s election, besting the previous record set in 2012 by more than 5,800 votes. Due to a record 185,786 registered voters, the election turnout percentage (73.8) trailed both the 2008 (82.95 percent) and 2012 (75.11 percent) presidential elections.

Monterey County Registrar of Voters Claudio Valenzuela noted the election “attracted a large group of new voters” as part of the record voter registration number. He also noted that this year’s election was marked by a three-card ballot to accommodate the 24 local measures and 17 statewide propositions. See official results

TAMC to move forward on sales tax plans
The 30-year, $600 million transportation sales tax known as Measure X emerged victorious in the Transportation Agency for Monterey County’s (BCM)  third bid for a guaranteed funding source for local roads and regional transportation projects, gaining the needed two-thirds voter approval by 1,355 votes out of 129,839 cast on the measure. TAMC executive director Debbie Hale announced last week that work would begin on implementing the sales tax plan, including preparations for collecting and accepting the estimated $20 million per year the tax is expected to bring in starting April 1.

“We are thrilled with the outcome and thank voters for recognizing the need and the importance of this measure,” Hale said. “Now it’s time for us to get to work on the next phase of the process: putting procedures and processes in place. These have to be established before we begin to work on the projects in the investment plan.”

Hale indicated in the announcement that the initial revenue from the sales tax measure is expected to be released by the state Board of Equalization starting July 1. She added that voters shouldn’t expect to see new road maintenance or improvement projects right away. She did say she’s hopeful the county and area cities that will receive about 60 percent of the revenue will be able to start “filling potholes and making road maintenance improvements in their communities” by next fall. Coworking feasibility report suggests unmet local demand
The Fort Ord Reuse Authority and the Institute for Innovation and Economic Development at California State University, Monterey Bay (BCM) completed a regional coworking space market feasibility report to better understand local market readiness to support investment in coworking facilities.Results of this study suggest an unmet demand for new coworking spaces in the study area. Neighboring communities with similar demographics have a proliferation of coworking spaces, while the study area has few. 
  • Among other indicators, new community development as part of the civilian reuse of the former Fort Ord continues to gain momentum. Seventy percent of survey respondents indicated a desire to use coworking facilities.
  • These trends indicate an existing current demand and growing future demand for coworking spaces. Early market actors could take advantage of the current market and service provision imbalance. See the report here.

Hartnell College offering dual enrollment classes at Soledad High School
A new program at Soledad High School is letting high school seniors earn both high school and college credits concurrently.  Thanks to recently approved legislation, Hartnell College has partnered with Soledad Unified School District to offer two classes through concurrent enrollment. High school students get credit both in their high school and Hartnell without even leaving their campus.
The purpose of the class is to help students transition from high school into a college setting. It’s built in three phases. In the first one, students learn their learning styles and more about themselves and who they are, what role they play in their families and society. During the second phase, they learn about programs at the university setting that can give them an edge. Students also learn time management, the cost of college and financial aid.
