Public Eye Northwest Update, August 10, 2011

Building Dialog; Accenting Transparency, Accountabilty

Public Eye Northwest is a non-profit corporation working to foster digital civic literacy and voluntary government transparency. Open records laws are important, but so is the information governments make available freely online. Through our non-partisan Public Data Ferret news knowledge base project - a Seattle Times news partner - we daylight important local, regional, state and U.S. government information that would otherwise fall between the cracks, accenting online disclosure and accountability and providing building blocks for informed dialog. Read more about our work program. We're proud to have guidance from our directors and advisors, who have many decades of experience in business, non-profits, law, media, technology and education.
Leadership, Community Outreach

There's growing attention to voluntary online government disclosure including public meeting agendas and agenda items; special reports, audits and investigations; and databases and data sets. The more that public disclosure and its benefits can be rountinely integrated into the daily business of government and citizenship, the better. We've discussed this in several published analyses; Sunlight Foundation Blog, Open Knowledge Foundation Blog, Investigate West, Crosscut, and Intersect. Public Data Ferret's participation in the Seattle Times' News Partner Network brings our daily headlines to this fine locally-owned newspaper's broad online audience, while we work with other media and institutions to grow the conversation. As you can see at our In The News and Community Outreach pages.
Autumn 2011 Internships

Our summer 2011 interns have been doing a great job. Take a look for yourself at the Public Data Ferret news-writing portfolios of Melissa Steffan, Seattle Paciffic University; Kyle Kim, a recent Whitworth College grad; and Andrew Taylor, Western Washington University. We're also being assisted in fundraising research and marketing by another intern, Leif Hansen.

Fall Internship Details

We have new openings this fall for Public Data Ferret interns. For news-writing interns, we seek two college students or recent college grads experienced in public records or policy research, with strong writing skills and online journalism portfolios. For a data visualization intern, we seek a college undergrad or grad student with a strong project portfolio demonstrating tools such as Tableau Public and Google Public Data Explorer. For a Web developer intern, we seek a college undergrad or grad student experienced in building and deep-tweaking WordPress sites.

Internships are unpaid, and start no later than early October. Teachers: if these internships can be for academic credit, we're ready to work with you on criteria and deliverables. Applicants: in the body of an email, please send letter, resume and work sample links to matt@publiceyenorthwest.org (Public Eye Northwest Executive Director Matt Rosenberg).

Tax-Exempt Status, Fundraising

Public Eye Northwest became a Washington state-registered non-profit corporation in November 2010. Our application to the IRS for federal tax-exempt 501c3 status was submitted in February of 2011 and is currently under review. We are being assisted most ably and generously, on a pro-bono basis, by the respected Seattle law firm, Foster Pepper. We hope to have more news for you soon. In the meantime if you are interested in making or discussing an individual, corporate or foundation contribution, please contact PEN founder and Executive Director Matt Rosenberg, matt@publiceyenorthwest.org or (206) 661-1958.
