About Our Side Event

Preliminary findings from Phase I of research conducted by IDPP on the “Effective Participation of Persons with Disabilities in the UN System and Broader Global Governance Processes” will be presented. Practices on inclusion and accessibility, as well as lessons from and implications of the Third World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction and other UN conferences, will also be shared.

Discussions will focus on taking action toward disability-inclusive Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and global governance processes, as well as the prospective addition of a 10th UN Designated Major Group for persons with disabilities.

About COSP-8

The UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, adopted in 2006, has been ratified by 154 countries and signed by 159 countries around the world. The annual Conference of States Parties to the Convention (COSP) has been rapidly growing as a global mechanism to exchange experiences and new ideas on the implementation of the Convention.

COSP is one of the world's largest international disability community gatherings and takes place at UN Headquarters in New York. The 8th COSP will take place from 9-11 June 2015. The theme of this year's Conference is "Mainstreaming the rights of persons with disabilities in the post-2015 development agenda."
