Local NDAA resolution campaign begins
Please sign this online petition supporting a resolution by your city or county council against the indefinite detention provisions of the National Defense Authorization Act.  Then please forward this email and share it with your Facebook and Twitter friends.

The NDAA has expanded the scope of the "War on Terror," and codified the practice of indefinite detentions without trial by the US military; for more information, please visit our web site.  The issue can seem complex and far off, but it's not.  It's about as basic as it gets: the right to due process and a real trial.

We're joining nationwide grassroots campaigns against the NDAA organized by the Bill of Rights Defense Committee (BORDC), the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), and other groups.

Takoma Park first goal
Last Monday, we presented our own resolution to the Takoma Park City Council that...
  • urges the repeal of the indefinite detention  provisions of the recently passed National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA),
  • calls for the expiration of the Authorization of Use of Military Force (AUMF) upon cessation of combat operations in Afghanistan,
  • instructs city agencies to ensure that any detainees in Takoma Park have access to a trial, counsel, and due process, and to decline federal agency requests under authority of the NDAA that would infringe on constitutionally guaranteed  rights,
  • states the sense of the City or County Council that neither the NDAA nor the AUMF can authorize US armed forces to arrest, detain, or try persons within the US, or militarily detain without trial civilians captured anywhere, and
  • requests that our Congressman and Senators monitor the implementation of of the NDAA and work for its repeal.
Please sign our online petition supporting this resolution for your city or county, forward this email to friends -- especially in Takoma Park -- and share it using the Facebook and Twitter buttons on the upper right. The petition is also the best place to indicate you'd like to help as a volunteer.   We'll be petitioning at the Farmer's Market, attending public comment periods at City Council meetings, and organizing informational meetings.
