Bystander Intervention Training, Thu Dec 15 7pm, Silver Spring Civic Center

Have you ever wondered what you should do if you see harassment or bullying? How should you respond to support the person being harassed? It's a question a lot of us have thought about lately, as hate crimes and harassment have surged since the election.  Join us next week for

Bystander Intervention Training
Thursday, December 15, 7-9pm
Silver Spring Civic Center
1 Veterans Plaza, Silver Spring

Eventbrite free ticketing (for overflow rain checks)

Co-sponsored by County Councilmember Tom Hucker, with ACLU-Montgomery County, Bill of Rights Defense Committee/Defending Dissent Foundation, Jewish Voice For Peace-DC Metro, Just Peace Circles, Inc., Peace Committee of Sandy Springs Friends Meeting, & Peace Action Montgomery

Bystander training empowers you to identify and intervene in harmful or potentially harmful situations.  It's based on work done on campuses to teach students how to interject themselves if they see a situation that could lead to a sexual assault. The training will include role-plays and ideas for creative ways to diffuse situations and support the person being harassed.  We'll also discuss ways we can combat the Trump agenda here in Montgomery County and Maryland. We have several ideas, and you may too. Come and share them.

MCCRC proposes local county ordinances

Montgomery County is a “sanctuary” county, which means our county police will play no role in enforcing federal immigration law, and that is significant. But the county can go much further than that, and pass model local ordinances to prohibit or limit law enforcement engagement in:

  • discriminatory profiling
  • intelligence-sharing with federal authorities
  • undercover infiltration of activist groups and religious institutions
  • cooperation with military personnel
  • over-policing or restricting protests
  • prying into social media accounts

MCCRC will work with allies in the county to customize these model legislative proposals, which were drafted by the Bill of Rights Defense Committee/Defending Dissent Foundation.

#NoMuslimRegistry March

Monday, December 12, 1-3pm
US Department of Justice, 950 Pennsylvania Ave. NW to the White House

Join MoveOn.org and DRUM - Desis Rising Up & Moving in a march and rally with Muslims and allies against any registry that targets Muslim communities. Grassroots pressure is needed for President Obama to fully eliminate a dormant Muslim registry program (NSEERS) so Donald Trump can't simply restart it with the click of a mouse after he takes office.
