Tell Ike Leggett: Support the TRUST Act

Please write and call County Executive Ike Leggett and County Councilmember Roger Berliner and tell them to support the Maryland TRUST Act ( HB 1362/SB 835).  This act would prohibit any Maryland local government, police, or other official from using public funds, facilities, to detain, arrest, or use other government powers for immigration enforcement purposes - it would make Maryland a sanctuary state.  It's crucial that Montgomery County -- all of it, from Leggett to the County Council to the cities of our county -- stand behind this legislation.

Meaningful SWAT reform at risk in Annapolis: here's what to do

Delegate David Moon and Senator Will Smith have drafted legislation (HB739/SB941) that (1) would require police departments to provide data for an annual report about SWAT team deployments -- when, where, and why they happened, what happened, and who was encountered -- and (2) would require a state police training and standards agency to develop training and deployment standards.  Standards without data to measure adherence are pointless -- yet there's a risk that this part of the bill may be removed by the House Judiciary committee.

So please call key members of the House Judiciary Committee (Chairman Joseph Vallario, Vice Chair Kathleen Dumais, and Deputy Whip Curt Anderson)  and write your delegates to urge them to support real SWAT reform -- not just standards that the public can't measure against annual data. When you're done, have a look at SWAT reports from 2010 to 2014 -- committee leadership seem to believe the public doesn't care enough to read these reports; let's prove them wrong.

MCCRC General Meeting, Mar 3/7 7-9pm, Albert Einstein HS

Even as we ask our members of Congress to fight Trump at the national level, there's a lot of work to be done here in Montgomery County to prevent our country from aiding and abetting the Trump agenda locally.

We have formed working groups to develop plans to:
  • Strengthen sanctuary in the county, its cities, and the state to protect our neighbors from Trump's draconian immigration policies;
  • Challenge county programs that promote Islamophobia;
  • Promote police reform by improving accountability, and ending discriminatory profiling and excessive militarization;
  • Get transparency on what surveillance tools local police forces are using, and what information about us they are sharing with state and federal agencies.

Thanks for your support!  So we can tell you about ways to make a difference in *your* community, please take a minute to update your contact information. We hope you'll add optional information like volunteer interests and your city and street address (to help determine your local, state, and federal representatives). We will not share this information with other organizations.
Support our ally Bill of Rights Defense Committee / Defending Dissent Foundation - join their mailing list, and consider donating!  Year in, year out, this organization shares organizing expertise, draft legislation, and news analyses that help citizens around the country defend our rights.
