Annapolis: rally, pack hearing room for police reform

Maryland is at the crossroads for police reform.  Hearings on a multitude of police reform bills will happen this Tuesday, Feb 23 starting at 1pm in the Lowe House Office Building in Annapolis (map).  The Maryland Coalition for Justice and Police Accountability will mark the occasion with a 11am rally in the Baltimore City Delegation Room (Room 145); police reform advocates will then pack the House Judiciary Committee hearing room to make sure delegates hear our message loud and clear

Check for details and updates at the MCJPA event page, and use it to notify Facebook friends. Montgomery County police reform advocates can arrange to set up a carpool or join one here.

For more on the bills involved -- especially HB1016, the leadership bill, and HB760, Delegate Carter's better bill -- please read more here.  You may also want to bookmark MCCRC's legislative tracker.

Don't Break Our Phones!

Also on Tuesday, Feb 23, there will be a rally in Washington DC urging the federal government: Don't Break Our Phones!

WHEN: Tuesday, Feb 23, 5:30pm
WHERE: FBI Building, 935 Pennsylvania Ave and 9th Street NW (map)
ORGANIZERS: Fight for the Future

The FBI has obtained a court order to force Apple to provide a "back door" to an iPhone used by one of the perpetrators of the San Bernardino shootings.  The problem is, that's a back door to everyone else's iPhone as well - a terrible idea for your own security, for civil liberties, and for human rights here and abroad.  But don't take our word for it -- read what Electronic Frontier Foundation ("security agencies ...[creating] powers that are later used more widely and eventually abused"),  Bill of Rights Defense Committee ("Public opinion is key: law enforcement agencies know that the public values privacy), the ACLU ("government’s legal theory is unbounded and dangerous") and Apple have to say about it.

If you go, take pictures and send them, your story, and your reason for joining the rally to MCCRC at mococivilrights@gmail.com.

Support "Maryland Welcomes Refugees"! Write your delegates and senator now urging them to sign State Senator Jamie Raskin's excellent letter (at the link) to Gov. Hogan endorsing Syrian refugee settlement in Maryland. Just provide your address, the web site will set you up with the right delegation email addresses.
We haven't forgotten about Guantanamo, and we know you haven't either.  Join our petition to local congressional members to hold the Pentagon accountable for its footdragging, and join others in our photo "Close Guantanamo" campaign!
Thanks for all you do!
