HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH
Now and then, we have a glut of events, and this is one of those times! And many of the events celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, which kicks off on September 15. So it's a wonderful mix of happenings. The Picks of the Litter were a tough choice!

I'm skipping an article this week and jumping right into the long list of activities for your kids and family. And if you like something you see, please share the newsletter with your friends!

PICKS OF THE LITTER

Mighty Chondria: Science for Kids

Your Tweens ages 9-12 years old can join the science fun online with Might Chondria as they learn to perform a whole host of lab experiments using household supplies. Registration is limited and required. Please refer to the supply list online. If you need supplies, kits are available while they last and can be picked up at the Hastings Branch Library. The online fun happens on Monday, September 13 and 27, October 11 and 25, at 4:00 PM.

Loose Parts

The Monrovia Public Library is zigging where others are zagging with unstructured craft time for school-age children, no reservation required. Using a variety of supplies, kids are inspired to make whatever comes to mind! It happens on September 23, from 3:30 PM till 4:30 PM.
 

 


 

Talk Like a Pirate Day Celebration

I can't come up with anything better than what the Santa Catalina Branch Library posted: "Come all ye mateys and walk the plank to fun-filled pirate-themed activities and stories. Arrrr you ready?!" It all happens on September 16, from 3:30 PM till 4:30 PM. Everyone on your ship is invited.

Laser Tag After Hours

I'm not sure what else needs to be said other than: "laser tag in the library!" Where was this when I was a teen?! Teens (grades 6-12) must register, and there are a limited number of spots. The fun happens at the Monrovia Public Library on September 17 and October 22, from 6:00 PM till 8:00 PM.

Family Fun Films

Villa Parke Community Center Branch Library invites your whole family to join them on Thursday from September 2nd through 30th, from 3:30 PM till 5:30 PM. Call the library at 626-744-6510 for specific titles.

 



Book Talk: 10/10 Picture Books

You and your littlest ones (ages 0-5) can join virtual book talks to learn about new books in a fun and entertaining way. The Monrovia librarians cover picture books and chapter books on the library's YouTube channelHere's the schedule:

Picture Books: September 4th, October 2nd, November 6th

Chapter Books: September 18th, October 16th, November 20th

 



Little Listeners Storytime in the Park

Parents, little ones (ages 2-5), and their siblings can join the Monrovia librarians for engaging stories and songs for your listeners. The reading fun happens in Library Park near the playground (weather permitting) on Wednesdays, from September 8th through November 24th, from 10:00 AM till 10:45 AM.

 


 

 

 



Get Building!

Kidspace is opening its Might Build Guild on September 17. The indoor gallery features a new cardboard construct-a-thon set in a whimsical, imaginative cardboard forest. This sounds cool! Members get priority tickets. It's ideal for kids ages five and over. See the site for tickets, COVID restrictions, and other details.

 


 

Lucha Libros Kickoff and Masks

It's another twofer! This time it's a craft (Lucha Libros mask) and the book club kickoff. Register your kids ages 5-12 years old before the first meeting on September 16, at 4:30 PM. The Lamanda Park Branch Library will email you a mask template. Then, during the Zoom meeting, you and your kid will learn how to make the mask and go over how the book club works. Future meetings will be in-person at either the San Rafael or Lamanda Park branches.

 


 

Folktale Fun with Flights of Fantasy

The Flights of Fantasy Story Theatre invites your whole family to enjoy their "rollicking" take on folktales, fables, and rhymes from around the world. It's literature in a whole new, fun and funny, way. Each show consists of two stories, and past shows are available on the Pasadena Library's YouTube channel. The remaining two shows go live online on September 17 and 24, from 10:00 AM till 10:30 AM. See the event listing for show details.

 



Inventing Latinos bookcover

Just Reads Book Group: "Inventing Latinos"

The socially aware book club is back with a discussion of Inventing Latinos: A New Story of American Racism by Laura Gomez. The book is available in print from the Pasadena Public Library, ebooks, or Audiobooks from CloudLibrary and hoopla. The discussion is open to teens and adults on September 18, from 10:30 AM till 11:30 AM. Registration required.
 

 


 

Pasadena Loves YA: Gigantic Book Giveaway

On September 18, from 3:00 PM till 5:00 PM, Hastings Branch Library plays host to all lovers of Young Adult literature. Open to Teens and adults; visitors can browse gently used young adult titles and even bring their own to swap for something new. No registration is required. Read Around the World Book Club: Colombia

Registration is open for the next stop of the Read Around the World Book Club. Your kids in grades 3-5 will learn about Colombia by discussing the book What if a Fish by Anika Fajardo. They will also make Colombian buses, called chivas, out of paper. Seats are limited. The book club meets at the Lamanda Park Branch Library on September 22, from 4:00 PM till 5:00 PM.

 



Altadena Library Tween Switch Hour promo image

Tween Switch Hour

If you have a Tween (ages 8-12) who enjoys playing a Nintendo Switch, the Altadena Library has some fun for them every other Thursday through November 18, from 4 PM till 5 PM. Things kick off with Mario Kart racing on September 23. The library has a limited number of loaner Switches and copies of Mario Kart for kids to use at the event on a first-come, first-serve basis. 
 


 

La Pintoresca LEGO Club

Your LEGO builders, ages 5-12 years old (and the adults who are just forced to accompany them - darn it!), come together on Mondays from September 13 through October 11, at 4:30 PM at the La Pintoresca Branch Library to show off your building skills in weekly challenges. Masks are required.

 


 

Afternoon Games

The whole family is invited to the Villa Parke Community Center Branch Library to play games, from board games to giant dominos. The fun happens on September 14, from 2:00 PM till 4:00 PM.

 


 

Take & Make: Alpaca Activity

This weaving activity is inspired by the alpacas indigenous to the Peruvian Andes. Open to the whole family. Registration begins September 15 with limited kits available from the Santa Catalin Branch Library. The project continues through October 15.

 


 

Take & Make: Loteria

We're big fans of games, so this is HIGH on our list of things to do! Get together with the whole family and make your own version of Loteria, a bingo game that is more than 100 years old. Kits (including game boards) are available from the San Rafael Branch Library. Registration for kits opens on September 15 and runs through September 30 or until supplies last. 

 


 

Take & Make: Sugar Skull

This is a twofer! Make a sugar skull now that you can then use during Dia de Los Muertos next month! Kits are available from the Hill Branch Library starting September 15 while supplies last. Call 626-744-7264 with any questions.

 


 

Hispanic Heritage Tales and Craft

Bring your kids and Tweens for a special storytime and craft in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month on September 15, from 3:00 PM till 4:00 PM at the Villa Parke Community Center Branch Library.

 


 

Stay & Play

La Pinoresca Branch Library is putting out an open call to all caregivers (grandfolks, aunts, uncles, nannies, etc.) to join them and a resource professional for an hour of play, learning, singing, reading, and fun! Bring your 0-5-year-old on Thursdays through October 14, at 10:30 AM.
