Looking Ahead: Internet Marketing in 2012

2011 has seen a lot of change in the internet marketing realm.  From Google+ to a Facebook redesign and the introduction of Timeline the year has been nothing short of exciting and as we approach 2012 it shows little sign of slowing down.  As we head into the coming year we'll be keeping our eye on some of the following possibilities, as should your practice.

  • SoLoMo - An abbreviation of Social, Local, and Mobile; these trends were huge in 2011 and will continue to grow in 2012.
  • Integration of Google+ and Google Places - A recent slip up from Google shows that the integration of Places and Google+ is immenent and setting up a Google+ Business Page will be even more crucial
  • Content is still King - In words, images, and video content still reigns supreme. But as search results get more localized and personalized the quality of your content and how people share it and engage it is more vital than ever.
  • Live and Die by the search engine - If you're putting all your eggs in the SEO basket and ignoring social, local, and traditional PR you are bound to feel the impact in the coming year.
  • Engage - It's been key in 2011, and will continue in 2012. Fresh, engaging content on your blog and social networks are vital for buidling links, relationships, and authority online.
The days of a stale web presence have come and gone.  It's not enough to have a website with some keywords slapped on it with a bunch of backlinks.  You have to present content that is engaging and worth talking about in order to stand out in the online croud.  Share your insight on current events related to your field, reach out to reporters, become an authority in your field and write content that may appeal to your peers.  Show your patients, your peers, and the world that you are current, active, and an authority.  By doing so your content will have a greater potential to reach more people and ultimately give a sense of authority to the search engines.
