Dear Friends,

On behalf of the Board and myself, welcome to our latest edition of Flying Kites. I am honoured to be back in an operational capacity with Deaf Children Australia. Having worked here for 8 years in services and sitting on the Board as a Director for 4 years, and raising a young deaf adult, the mission to inspire and empower deaf and hard of hearing children and young people is very dear to me.

Over the past few months, Deaf Children Australia has had some very successful events. Some which benefit deaf and hard of hearing youth now, such as the YMCA Youth Parliament, and others that stand to benefit the education and access for deaf and hard of hearing children, youth and adults in the future, such as SUP-4-DCA raising over $80,000 for our video outreach program; and the interpreting and captioning of a live St Kilda AFL game.

Our vision is to create a world where children and young people who are deaf and hard of hearing have the opportunity to achieve positive life outcomes, and this is always at the forefront of all that we do.  Through diligence and hard work, our Sign for Work team has recently, received a 3 star rating, and been advised by the Department of Employment that they have been awarded another contract for 5 years until 2023. This enables them to continue their amazing work in the delivery of specialist and generalist job placement services. This includes working with deaf and hard of hearing students in school leavers programs and supporting them to gain meaningful work experience placements. Read about the exciting new Youth WAVE (Work and Vocational Experience) program.
And for more about what’s happening at Deaf Children Australia, please take the time to read this edition.

Warmest Regards,

Roz Keenan
Acting Chief Executive Officer, DCA

Spring Appeal: "This has changed the course of my life"
Cate Dunn grew up in a farming community hundreds of kilometres from Melbourne. “I felt like I didn’t know the world around me, it was lonely. Being in a rural area, I didn’t have any deaf role models and was unable to be reassured that it was actually okay to be deaf in a hearing world, we just needed to learn how to adapt.”
