Hello,
I would like to introduce you to a new resource for parents with a deaf or hard of hearing child (DHH) – the Flying Colours website.
Flying Colours is for parents with a DHH child (0-7). It is designed to be a helpful 'journey partner' as parents navigate the early days and months of diagnosis. It features a simple, easy to use, easy to access collection of relevant, balanced, unbiased information and links.
The site has a clear focus on what parents have told us they want to know to help them through their first few days, months and years. To find out what parents want we commissioned the most comprehensive survey of its kind in Australia which told us:
- 75% of parents indicated the need for schools to have access to an info pack about deaf awareness
- 62% are looking for access to Auslan resources for their family
- 60% are keen to link to families with a lived experience
More than half of parents who responded wanted to know more about social events and a high number are worried about limited access to community activities for their child.
Throughout the Survey parents told us they want easy access to early intervention specialists, clinicians, schools and other Deaf organisations. This is what we've started with the service directory. If you'd like to be listed please let us know!
Perhaps the most evocative sections of Flying Colours are the stories we have gathered from families and people with lived experience. These are inspirational - we are so grateful to those that agreed to share their journey - what they have learned, what they went through in those early days and tips they have picked up along the way.
We have had a terrific response to the site so far, so keep telling us what you need at Flying Colours, we’re here to help.
Best Wishes,
David Wilson
