Dear Friends,

I am pleased to present this newsletter on behalf of Deaf Children Australia. The board would like to thank Roz Keenan for the excellent work as the CEO of DCA. We have started the recruitment process for the ongoing CEO role
Last month we closed the applications for the 2019 Youth Grants. Successful applicants will be notified in the coming months and we look forward to seeing their achievements.

In May we hosted an accessible polling booth at DCA in Fenton hall. Members of the public and the deaf community had access to a hearing loop and Auslan assistance to help them vote.

I attended the DCA Family Camp which was held in Malmsbury from May 31 to June 2. We had 22 families and 32 children attend the weekend camp.
It was a wonderful opportunity to meet the families, understand their needs and the associated relationship with DCA currently and in the future.

We will be hosting the Queensland Day Camp June 22.

June 22 we will be hosting a Darwin Family Day. We will have guest speakers to discuss the NDIS and how to get the best outcomes and how to get the most out of school for deaf and hard of hearing students. We will also have activities for the kids and it will be a great opportunity for parents and families to connect.

We also have our Winter School Holiday program starting up on 30 June with something for all different ages and interests, and opportunities for families to catch up as well.

This month we have been selected to participate in Local Matters at Grilld in Windsor. When you order a burger pop your Local Matters token in our jar.

DCA Family Camp
DCA just hosted another great Family camp at Doxa’s Malmsbury camp on May 31 to June 2. The number of families who applied overwhelmed us. Twenty-two families attended with 32 kids with a variety of hearing losses, technologies, communication needs, cultures and locations.

Youth Grants

Youth Grant: Kittipat Guitar lessons

Kittipat was awarded a Youth Grant in 2018 to help him learn guitar.
In his application, Kittipat said his goal was to learn to read music and build his confidence to play the guitar at school assemblies.

Kittipat said his end goal was to gain confidence and show other deaf children that you can do something that is auditory and that you may think is impossible.

Donation to Youth Grants

Recently Emma won an award for her Auslan Studies at Melbourne Polytechnic and donated money she was awarded to our Youth Grants.

We recently spoke with Emma about her passion for Auslan.

Dreaming Those Big Dreams
Nine year old Ewan has had more than his share of adversity through life but he has big dreams to build on his love of coding and animations to become an illustrator or video game designer. Ewan was born with a bilateral moderate to severe hearing loss that was diagnosed through the Universal Newborn Hearing Screening Program. Russell shared their family’s experiences with us:

“Ewan may progressively lose more hearing”
