Dear Friends,

The team at Deaf Children Australia hopes you are all well and staying connected with friends and family during these unprecedented circumstances. The way we connect and deliver services had to change of course, but our commitment has not faltered.

We responded quickly to the restrictions to deliver services online, on the phone or email. We are here to keep delivering the vital support and advice families, children and young people need.

Thank you for adapting with us.

We have had to postpone and reschedule some of our 2020 events and activities including our Camps, Platypus Playgroup, Youth Grants and more, which we cover below.

Tax Appeal
The appeal launched on Friday. Donations great and small make a significant contribution and help us to create and implement programs to inspire and empower deaf and hard of children.

Parent Mentors - online support is available
The Parent Mentor Program launched at the Royal Children's Hospital earlier in the year and was well received. No sooner had we launched it, we all had to go into lock down.

Rest assured Parent Mentors continue to help families online, the phone or via email. This has replaced the face to face engagement we run in Queensland and Victoria.  Moving online means we can offer the program to parents across Australia.

Meet the team
We'd like to introduce you to the incredible people that make DCA tick. In this edition you'll meet Stacey, one of our terrific Parent Mentors, and Victor, one of our inspiring Youth Workers.

Programs launching in 2020
We continue to develop programs to build the life skills of young deaf and hard of hearing people. In July we are running an online mentor program, Get Connected. It is a pilot we'd like to develop to support people aged 12 to 15 years of age.  Read on to find out more.

Since 2012 we have run DeafNT, supporting the Deaf and hard of hearing community in the Northern Territory. We have now made the very hard decision to close the Darwin office on 30 June 2020. We are very sorry to have to do this, it is not an easy decision to make. Further information is available on the DeafNT website.

This week is National Volunteer Week and we'd like to acknowledge the generous contribution of our volunteers, thank you very much for your support.

We are keen to deliver the news and information you need, and welcome your ongoing feedback,  Enjoy this edition.

Platypus Playgroup was scheduled to launch this year. We have made the decision to launch it early 2021 when we believe it will be safe to do so. It will be a weekly playgroup

It will offer a wealth of activities will build a child's social, emotional and intellectual development in a bilingual Auslan/English setting. Register your interest.

Meet the team
Stacey is one of our fabulous Parent Mentors based in Queensland. She is mum to three children, Chelsea her 13-year-old daughter and twins aged 8, Grace and Noah. The twins were born premature at 28 weeks. Grace incurred many severe health issues. She has a moderate/severe to severe hearing loss bilaterally. She wears hearing aids and also has a Roger FM system.  Stacey and her husband, Adam had to work out for themselves the best path for Grace, something Stacey doesn’t wish on anyone. It is why she is so passionate about her role and the Parent Mentor program. Read on
Victor is one of our terrific Youth Workers, he supports our young clients from age 6 through to 23.
