Dear Friends,

On behalf of the Board and myself, welcome to our first edition of Flying Kites for 2018. What a great start to the year we have had too. I am really excited by the stories we will share with you in this edition, and the news and events coming up in early 2018.

November marked the beginning of a new venture in Queensland  with the team successfully holding their inaugural Day Camp. With over 70 people in attendance, the day was jam packed with activities – high ropes, obstacle courses, petting zoo, crafts, face painting and family games.

This was all topped off with a friendly visit from the Fire Brigade, who thankfully weren’t there to put out the campfire after dinner.  It was such a success, the team have set the date for the next one on 10 March.

January saw the first of our School holiday programs roll out, with many children and families enjoying time together with friends. The photos with smiling faces tell the story. One great event even coincided with the 17th Australian Deaf Games in Albury Wodonga.

February is also shaping up to be a great month, with Auslan Interpreted Tours of the Victorian Parliament House happening for the first time. Our Auslan for Families program is kicking off for  a new semester, and many families are engaging in our Auslan Video Outreach program from their own home or school.

Just prior to Christmas, we welcomed Celeste who will be the face of our Workplace Giving initiative. We are aiming to get workplaces on board as it will assist us to continue to grow and expand our services to benefit deaf and hard of hearing children, youth and families -  beyond those programs funded by the NDIS. For more about what’s happening at Deaf Children Australia please take the time to read this edition.

Warmest Regards

Roz Keenan
Chief Executive Officer, DCA

She shared with us her experiences each day, and intends to pursue a career in audiology to help others just like her in the future. Start thinking about whether you want to apply for a Youth Grant as the grants open in March. Dream big!

DCA has enjoyed a long partnership with Arts Centre Melbourne to help make the performing arts more accessible for deaf and hard of hearing children. When Arts Centre Melbourne reached out to us to find someone to decorate a piano for the 2018 Piano Project, we linked them with Rosanna Golf Links Primary, who designed an incredible piano featuring flowers and butterflies for the outdoor interactive exhibition!
