Puggles Swim will make learning to swim more accessible to families with deaf and hard hearing children because they can learn to swim in a mainstream swim class.

Great News! We are excited to introduce you to Puggles Swim, Australia’s first nationally endorsed swimming program supporting the communication needs of deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) children.

Our vision is to create a world where children who are DHH have every opportunity to reach their full potential. This means access to all the opportunities available to their hearing peers. Puggles Swim will make a significant contribution to this.

In a national survey (2020-21), parents of DHH children, demonstrated they are worried about their child having the opportunity to take part in mainstream sporting activities, especially swimming. Water safety is a huge priority for every parent.

So, we took action and developed Puggles Swim with Australia’s leading swim experts.

Puggles Swim will make learning to swim more accessible to families with DHH children because they can learn to swim in a mainstream swim class.

We ran Puggle Swim pilots and saw the immediate change in a child’s ability to learn when the instructor knew how to communicate with them and knew key Auslan signs.

Many parents have told us when their child is in a mainstream swim class, they fall behind, lose confidence, or feel left out. There are deaf swim instructors, but there are not enough to accommodate DHH children across Australia who want to learn to swim.

Puggles Swim will see more children become water-safe while building their confidence and creating inclusive communities.  Currently, only 55% of children in Australia are learning to swim.

We should all aim to build and strengthen the opportunities for DHH children to participate in swimming, an essential life skill, one offering benefits both in and out of the pool.

We have developed a range of free and fun resources, including tips to help parents continue their child’s swim journey outside of the lesson.
