News from Hansen
Welcome to the latest News from Hansen. All of our team have been working remotely since March, continuing existing projects and engaging in many exciting new projects.

One such project that we are pleased to share with you is our feasibility study for the Frankston Social Housing Investment Grant (artist impressions above and later in this email).

Hansen, in association with Breathe Architecture, was engaged by Frankston City Council to prepare a three site investigation and feasibility study.

The study evaluated the potential of key sites to provide social and affordable housing whilst achieving best-practice urban design and sustainability outcomes.

The vision for each site was to build an attractive, high-quality place where people would choose to live, one that offers great design, great spaces, activities and services. Not just a temporary shelter but a place to call home in the long term.

Urban Design - Streets for People Update

In July we were excited to announce that Darebin City Council endorsed the proposed concept design for the Streets for People - Preston West.

The Preston West streetscape concept is one of a number of Streets for People corridors that the Hansen Urban Team has been developing in partnership with Darebin City Council, Martyn Group and Traffic Works since the 2018 launch of the program. Extensive community consultation was conducted to develop and adjust the concept design to meet local needs. Feedback from engagement reported strong support for the changes and proposed recommendations.

Many thanks to the City of Darebin Project Team and the Street Champions group for their input and hard work. We look forward to the implementation of Streets for People in the near future.
Happy 18th Birthday to the Design Team!

Eighteen years ago, Steve Schutt and Craig Czarny established the Design Team at Hansen Partnership, adding landscape architecture and urban design to the planning services already offered.

Since then the team has grown to 21 urban designers, landscape architects, architects and allied professionals, within a broader organisation of over 40 amazing people. The team has worked in every municipality in Melbourne and in most regions in Victoria, along with adventures to destinations like Viengxay in Laos, Xining in China and Con Dao Island off the coast of Vietnam.

Along the way, they have received International, National and State Awards and had the pleasure of working with thousands of clients, colleagues, collaborators and community members.
Port Campbell Town Centre Redesign

The Hansen Landscape Architecture Team are working with Corangamite Shire on the Port Campbell Town Centre Project, to create a pedestrian focussed and memorable place for visitors to the Twelve Apostles and Shipwreck Coast.

In particular, we wish to congratulate renowned artist Vicki Couzens, on being commissioned to design integrated artwork for the project.

Hansen Directors, Andrew Partos and Steve Schutt were on the artist selection panel. Of the large number of impressive submissions, Dr Couzens' proposal stood out as one that captured the character and vision of Port Campbell and one that will add a further dimension to the completed design.

Dr Couzens’ artwork will tell a story of interconnectivity, kinship and community, using design and materials that reflect the local environment. Dr Couzens will also be mentoring two Gunditjmara artists, handing on knowledge and skills to the next Custodians and Elders.

Hansen Partnership and Terroir are currently finalising the designs for the Town Centre. We are excited to see this project progress and look forward to seeing the designs turned into a reality!
Urban Planning - Newhaven College

The Hansen Planning Team have obtained planning approval for a new Performing Arts Centre at Newhaven College, Phillip Island.

Designed by the talented architectural team at Hayball, the Performing Arts Centre will provide a new home for the school’s strong performing arts program, incorporating an auditorium, rehearsal hall, practice rooms, and associated facilities.

We look forward to assisting Newhaven College with future stages of the masterplan, which includes an aquatic centre and an early learning centre.
Urban Planning - Mornington Peninsula

Hansen Planners have been working with Urban Enterprise, Irwin Consult and WSP to develop a Land Use & Infrastructure Assessment and Rezoning Strategy for Mornington Peninsula Shire Council.

There is currently a shortfall of industrial land within the municipality, and the project will help ensure that the Shire can accommodate and support important employment and business opportunities .

The draft Strategy provides the basis for a future Planning Scheme Amendment to rezone the preferred site (north of Hastings) for industrial/technology use with a focus on environmentally sustainable design.
Climate Change Update

In May, the City of Melbourne launched the Green Factor Tool, a green infrastructure assessment tool for landscape architects, ESD consultants, and other built environment professionals.

As part of their response to the climate and biodiversity emergency, the City of Melbourne has created the tool to help them work with developers to increase the amount and quality of greening on new buildings. It is the first tool of its kind developed in Australia.

Hansen are proud to be working with the City of Melbourne in assisting them with the second implementation phase of this important tool. For further information please contact Hansen Director, Jane Keddie

Frankston Social Housing Investment Project
Below are some of the images from the Feasibility Study developed for Frankston City Council.
Homelessness Week

Earlier this month, we highlighted National Homelessness Week, a week to support people struggling to find a safe roof over their heads.

Even before COVID-19 almost 120,000 people were homeless in Australia every night. A million Australians are currently unemployed with many facing rental stress and the possibility of losing their home.

Research confirms that Australia will need some 500,000 social and affordable homes by 2026. With demand outstripping supply, the need for more social housing is critical.

Life-changing housing initiatives like the Harris Transportable Housing Project give disadvantaged Melbournians permanent homes. The innovative project is a partnership between Launch Housing, Harris Capital and the Victorian Property Fund, using vacant Government land.

Hansen managed the planning permit applications and by working closely with Maribyrnong City Council approval was granted for all nine sites. See the video below for an update on the project.
