Read big, listen up and go high

If there’s ever a time to read big it’s lazy August. Bridget Waters recently tackled Thomas Mann’s 854-page whopper Buddenbrooks. In that vein, there’s plenty to get your teeth stuck into in your August newsletter. Elena Bowes talks to Anna Pasternak about her latest book, Lara: The Untold Love Story and the Inspiration Behind Doctor Zhivago. Also this month, John Simmons talks to oral historian Alain Dein ahead of his appearance at Wordstock. Dan Germain has written a wheehoozelling story about Mr Twit and we’ve got a special Dark Angels offer for those who want to spread their writing wings. Finally, Elen Lewis has Michelle Obama’s speech on repeat: “When they go low, we go high.”

Alan Dein will be sharing his wisdom with us at Wordstock this year. He’s an oral historian and award-winning radio broadcaster with a skill for encouraging people to take an interest in the seemingly uninteresting. He talks to John Simmons about his inspirations and why he never uses the term ‘ordinary people’.   ...more

Spotlight: Anna Pasternak

Anna Pasternak, the great niece of Doctor Zhivago author Boris Pasternak, has written a new book called Lara: The Untold Love Story That Inspired Doctor Zhivago. She talks to Elena Bowes about the art of balancing historical fact with emotional love story and how to write your first biography.   ...more
