DEANNA TEMPLETON:
THE SWIMMING POOL

CLINT WOODSIDE:
UNDERCOVER CARS

The Swimming Pool is a newly published photographic essay from Southern California-based photographer Deanna Templeton. Departing from her well-known street portraiture, it offers a deep and inspiring view of the human form underwater. The series was born after an impromptu nude swimming pool shoot of her husband - the artist Ed Templeton - which spurred an eight-year journey in the study of light, expression, and the enigma of water. Shooting entirely on color, black-and-white, and Polaroid film, Templeton sent her friends into the pool to be photographed in their truest form. Unlike the photographer's published work to date in which subjects were often strangers, Templeton found that creating these portraits required intimacy and connection. That is apparent in each image of this powerful series that captures strong, liberated individuals confident and at ease in their most beautiful and vulnerable moments. As Ed Templeton writes in his afterword, "the nude swimmer is floating in a void of quiet solitude, the gentle pressure of being underwater enclosing her form like a baby in a womb and nothing exists outside of this world. A lone figure amidst a sea of blues and greys and frenetic sunlight performing a solitary dance for the photographer above, choosing movements and directions, twisting and swooping, contorting and expelling breaths painting a picture of form and light together".

CLINT WOODSIDE:
UNDERCOVER CARS

First issued in 2013 as a Deadbeat Club zine, Clint Woodside's Undercover Cars has been newly re-conceived and substantially enlarged as an elegant hardcover book. Containing fifty-two images of cars parked in plain sight, but covered from the elements, it is the culmination of a series of color photographs – shot on film and printed in the dark room – spanning five years, scores of autos, and thousands of miles from Los Angeles to Bangkok. In his insightful essay, photographer and The Ice Plant publisher Mike Slack observes: “What strikes me now, looking at this fresh new edit, is not the boring ubiquity of the subject matter - the deadpan Christo-like charm of all these tarps attached to all these automobiles - but the man-made environments Woodside is showing us in the photographs, and the sense of walking-and-looking that the series implies. Never mind the covered cars; look at what surrounds them.” Hailing from New York, Clint Woodside currently resides in LA by way of Philadelphia. His work as a photographer has been shown in New York City, Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Jose, and Philadelphia as well as in Europe, Asia, and Australia. Woodside is also known for his extensive work as a curator, graphic designer, and as the creative pricipal of Deadbeat Club - a publisher and distributor of more than forty publications whose diverse roster of photographers includes Todd Hido, Tobin Yelland, Ed Templeton, Deanna Templeton, and many, many more.

Come join us in celebrating these fantastic new Um Yeah Arts and Kill Your Idols releases with our Deadbeat Club pals Clint and Deanna.  If you cannot attend but wish to purchase a signed copy of either book, or better yet, one of the deluxe slipcased editions of The Swimming Pool or Undercover Cars - each with a signed photographic print -please place your online order here by 12:00 noon on Saturday 6/18, or call us at 310-458-1499.
