Looking Back, Looking Forward

Heather Carroll is curating an upcoming exhibition at The Catherine G. Murphy Gallery at St. Catherine University that WARM members may be interested in.
Heather is an artist and archivist by training but her true joy is research. In her work and schooling, she kept bumping into WARM. In art school, WARM founders and members were her teachers and advisors. During grad school, she led a project to digitize the WARM Journals published between 1978 and 1987, which are a rich historical resource of the feminist art movement. When she was the processing archivist for the Weisman Art Museum at the University of Minnesota, she frequently came across materials that included WARM artists and exhibitions. Most recently, she has been working with the Fine Art Collection at St. Catherine University which contains a good number of artworks by women associated with WARM. This is where it (finally) dawned on her how important and intertwined the history of WARM is with St Catherine University and the broader local art scene. So she started researching.

Roots and Fruits: Exploring the History and Impact of the Women’s Art Registry of Minnesota will be at The Catherine G. Murphy Gallery from Nov 3 to Dec 15, 2018. This two-part exhibition combines period artworks and archival materials to trace pivotal events in the early history of the Women’s Art Registry of Minnesota and explores some of the ways its members catalyzed local art movements, programs and artists. With the national feminist art movement of the 1970s as a backdrop, this show reveals the significant role of WARM in shaping the careers of women artists in Minnesota and beyond.
The members of the WARM--in all its forms and iterations--are too many to include in a single exhibition in this gallery space. In spite of this and in the hopes of demonstrating the extraordinary reach of WARM, we will include a digital component in the exhibition built from an open call to all WARM members past and present.

Keep an eye on the WARM newsletters for more information about the open call!
