I've been struggling a lot with the "why" lately. Why am I doing what I'm doing? Why does it matter? Why do I care if anyone notices my work or not? Is it just money or fame I'm after? And if so, why are those things so important to me?

If you've ever felt that way, then maybe this quote (that I stole from my friend Chase Reeves' blog) will impact you as much as it did me:

“Don’t make stuff because you want to make money — it will never make you enough money. And don’t make stuff because you want to get famous — because you will never feel famous enough. Make gifts for people — and work hard on making those gifts in the hope that those people will notice and like the gifts.”

~ John Green

In a similar vein to the "why" is the fear that what I put out into the world isn't valuable. Like, I have nothing to say that hasn't already bean said.

I talked to Brad Frost about this in this week's episode of The Gently Mad. The whole episode was great, but one thing Brad said spoke directly to this issue:

"That’s such a misconception. A very small percentage of people working in our industry are glued to their twitter feeds 24 hours a day. If someone were to give a “web 101″ talk, or to write a blog post about that, I guarantee you there will be tons of people who will find that valuable. And as I travel around to more places and talk to more people, it has only reinforced that notion."

You can listen to that episode here.

If you're struggling with the why, I want to encourage you to focus on others. Do things to help other people. Even if that's not the motivation you stick with, it's a great place to start.

And if you're being held back by the fear that you have nothing unique to add to the conversation, put yourself out there anyway. The world is a big place and there are lots of people in it who will be helped by what you have to say.

Cheers,
Adam
