Film Festival to Showcase Environmental Issues

GreenHeroes recently attended a press conference Planet in Focus, the 12th annual environmental film festival to take place in Toronto, held to announce its line-up for this year and the Canadian and International Eco Hero winners it will award during the festival.

Producer/Director of GreenHeroes Joan Prowse is a board member of Planet in Focus and is confident that the many films to be screened at the festival are powerful enough to raise the profile of the environmental issues featured.

Revenge of the Electric Car is a behind the scenes look at the global comeback of the electric car and will be shown on opening night.

The Whale is the true story of a baby orca named Luna who befriends humans after being separated from his family and will be shown on closing night.

One of our GreenHeroes, Ric O’Barry will be at the Closing Night gala to accept the 2011 International Eco Hero Award Planet in Focus will present to him in honour of his 40 years of advocacy for dolphins. The short video about Ric, produced for GreenHeroes by CineFocus Canada, will introduce him.

The winner of the 2011 Canadian Eco Hero award is Kevin McMahon, an award-winning filmmaker and writer Planet in Focus is honouring for his work raising awareness about environmental issues in film.

“The true heroes are creating things like Planet in Focus,” said McMahon at the conference, referring to the story telling void the festival is helping to fill as many newspapers cut their environmental reporters.

GreenHeroes travels to Maritimes to film GreenHero contest winner

GreenHeroes was recently in Nova Scotia and P.E.I. to film and interview Mary Gorman, a GreenHero working hard to protect the Gulf of St. Lawrence from oil and gas development. Mary will be featured in a GreenHeroes episode to be released in the spring.

The TV appearance is the grand prize of a contest GreenHeroes held to honour a person doing extraordinary work for the environment.

During the trip GreenHeroes also talked to iconic Canadian author and conservationist Farley Mowat. GreenHeroes will feature him and Mary in an upcoming TV episode on Heroes protecting wildlife and their habitat.
