The San Diego Tourism Authority's annual promotion in which children receive free admission to San Diego theme parks and museums during the month of October begin today.
Among the so-called "Kidvasion" deals are free admission to the San Diego Zoo and Safari Park, museums in Balboa Park, Birch Aquarium in La Jolla, Legoland California in Carlsbad, Sea World San Diego and the USS Midway Aircraft Carrier Museum.

The zoo and Safari Park are planning children's activities throughout the month, including a musical production featuring the Fisher-Price Little People.

Youngsters will also be able to eat for free at many hotel restaurants throughout the region.

Most of the bargains are for youth aged 12 and under, but the deals and restrictions vary by venue. The restrictions generally limit the freebies to a corresponding number of adult admissions.

The zoo has offered kids-free Octobers for more than 25 years. Area tourism officials expanded the program last year to get families to extend the summer traveling season into a month when tourism traditionally falls off.

Other offerings include unlimited ride wristbands at Belmont Park at Mission Beach, free train rides on the Coaster and Amtrak's Pacific Surfline -- between San Diego and Oceanside only -- and a free surf lesson at the Surf Diva Surf School in La Jolla.

A list of deals is online at sandiego.org.

Mother Krystal Langford brings 9-year-old Andrew with autism to Del Mar Autism Awareness Day
On August 24 I celebrated autism awareness at the Del Mar Racetrack with hundreds of other autism families from my area and it was an incredible experience. As a parent to Andrew, a nonverbal 8-year-old with autism, I was able to meet jockeys and trainers and tour the stables as part of a special VIP tour. From there, we went to view the specially named “Autism Speaks Race” and then gave the winning horse, #10 “Hustlin Nu,” and jockey, Patrick Valenzuela, carnations at the Winner’s Circle. It was exciting because the stables that we toured belonged to winning horse, and we happened to greet and do photos with the winning jockey prior to the “Autism Speaks Race.” The jockey told us we brought him luck!
We felt like celebrities, with all the excitement, the photos of the winning horse, the flower presentation, and the cheering! Afterwards, we had the chance to enjoy some great kid-friendly and autism-friendly activities for the rest of the day in the infield. Andrew’s favorite activities included touring the stables, the bounce houses, seeing the horses, and checking out the lighting and ductwork of the stables.
Even though Andrew can, at times, have behaviors or anxiety around large crowds or with novel activities, he did great at Del Mar Autism Awareness Day and I know this will be a day he and I will always remember. It was the compassion and inclusiveness of this activity for our special needs families that made this opportunity really come to life thanks to Autism Speaks and Del Mar Racetrack.

San Diego-area resident Krystal Langford, 35 is parent to Andrew Langford, 8, who was diagnosed with autism at age two.
