Joy of Parenting
"What's the secret to a joyful family?"  It's really no secret, simply think about what it takes to cook your favorite dish.  Too much of one ingredient can overpower and ultimately ruin it.  Too little of another can leave the dish flavorless and unfullfilling.  But when you get the right balance of ingredients and you know when to use them, the result is a delicious, satisfying meal.  When it comes to creating joyful families, each family will have its own recipe and distinct flavor.  However, the one key ingredient that is absolutely essential to a joyful family is love.  Love is where joy comes from.

By now you have probably heard about SDG&E’s 12.2% rate increase, but here is the BAD news.  For many families the rate increase will be more significant than you think.
The Four Tiers:
How significantly this rate increase affects your bill will be determined by the amount of electricity you buy from each of their pricing tiers (illustrated below, image taken from an SDG&E bill).

Each month, every SDGE customer gets a limited amount of electricity at affordable prices—Tiers 1 and 2 on your electric bill, which cost about 14 and 17 cents per kilowatt hour.  The first two tiers are closely regulated to make sure everyone can meet their basic needs regardless of their income level.  Thanks to this regulation, electricity in Tiers 1 and 2 is cheap and protected from significant rate increases in the future. However, each SDGE customer has access to the same amount electricity in the lower tiers. This means your growing family gets the same amount of electricity as someone living in a one bedroom apartment across town.
Families use more electricity and are more likely to be buying out of Tiers 3 and 4, which are unregulated and expensive.  This is where the majority of SDGE will get their 12.2% rate increase because they can’t raise the prices in Tiers 1 and 2 by more than 3-5%.
Unfortunately, we won’t know exactly how much Tiers 3 and 4 will go up until the rate increase goes into effect on September 1st.
The good news is that you now have an option
The solar industry targets the electricity you are currently buying out of the higher tiers.  A well-designed solar system will prevent you from entering the most expensive tiers, and allow you to buy a small amount of electricity each month out of the cheap, regulated tiers.  This protects you from having to worry about SDGE’s future rate increases, and gets you better rates on your electricity today!
This rate increase announcement will be seen as a gold rush for solar installers.
You can expect to see more billboards, mailers and radio ads promising you that you will “SAVE THOUSANDS” just by switching to solar.  Unfortunately, going solar is not the best option for everyone and I have seen many people fall victim to overzealous installers in my career.  For people lucky enough to have the right characteristics to benefit from solar it should be a no brainer.  To find out if solar is a good fit for you without having to suffer through an aggressive pitch, feel free to email me with your name and number and I’ll be happy to help.
