TheBlueDotProject. The Alliance is hoping to bring the issues of perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs), including postpartum depression and anxiety, out of the shadows with this universal symbol.

TheBlueDotProject magnet or bumper sticker displayed on a car is a subtle way of saying “I’ve been there, or I know someone who has been there,” and gives women who are suffering from PMADs some much needed hope. According to co-founder Dr. Katie Hirst, Director of UCSD’s Maternal Mental Health Clinic, one in eight women suffers from postpartum depression or anxiety.

Peggy O’Neil Nosti, co-founder of the TheBlueDotProject, experienced postpartum anxiety after the birth of her third child. “I have had my share of trying times, and had always been able to rely on inner strength, the support of family and friends, and living a healthy lifestyle. This time, even with all of that, I could not power my way through it…the anxiety overpowered me,” said Nosti. “When other women would share similar experiences, it gave me hope that I would recover.”

TheBlueDotProject is funded through a generous grant from the Mason Hirst Foundation and is operated by volunteers from Postpartum Health Alliance.  BlueDots are now available with each $10 donation atwww.thebluedotproject.org.

Proceeds from the BlueDots will be directed to the development and provision of treatment services to women in low-income areas, where resources are particularly scarce.  Applications for mini-grants will be accepted beginning fall 2013.  For more information about TheBlueDotProject, visit www.thebluedotproject.org.
