While most of the country is getting ready to break out the scarves and mittens for the winter, Southern Californians get to celebrate the holidays with sand and sunshine. From a boardshorts-wearing Santa Claus to ice skating just steps from the Pacific Ocean here a a couple of California holidays traditions.
- Surfin’ Santa’s Arrival at Seaport Village - November 26, 2016- Donning boardshorts and his favorite Hawaiian shirt, Surfin’ Santa cruises into Seaport Village via speedboat and poses for free photos with visitors on his giant surfboard and six-foot wave. The free event also features a festive parade along the boardwalk, kids crafting activities, live street performers and holiday shopping at more than 50 unique, locally-owned shops and eateries throughout Seaport Village. And he’s not just a favorite among San Diegans – Surfin’ Santa was a finalist on TruTv’s “Santa’s in the Barn,” a competition to find America’s best Santa!
- Skating by the Sea at the Hotel del Coronado - November 24, 2016 – January 2, 2017- Hotel del Coronado in Southern California offers an unmatched skating experience with a beautiful outdoor ice rink overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Every winter, the hotel’s oceanfront lawn is transformed into a spectacular ice rink surrounded by palm trees strung with lights. Off the ice, the Hotel del Coronado continues the holiday cheer with “Jingle S’mores” roasts on the beach and “Elf Tuck-Ins” for hotel guests.
