No, I Won't and You Can't Make Me!

By Susie Walton

Sound familar?  Power struggles happen every day in every home.  Here are seven ways to help minimize power struggles:
  • Use friendly action:  Often times we nag our children so much that they become "parent deaf."  When your child come sinto the house and drops their backpack, walk, over, pick it up, and put it back in their hands without any words.
  • Use one word:  Children can receive up to 2,000 requests per day, "pick up your toys," "brush your teeth," etc.  They begin to tune out.  Touch your child on her arm and say one word, like "toys" or "teeth."
  • Give your child choices:  This strategy works best if the child likes both choices, but it more important that you are okay with either choice.
  • Win/Win negotiation:  :"How can we make this work for both of us?"  When kids see that you are interested in what they want, they are more willing to cooperate.
  • Find ways to make your child feel valuable & powerful:  Each week ask yourself, "What is one thing that I am doing for my child that he is capable of doing for himself?"  Then allow him to do it.
  • Offer Genuine Encounter Moments:  When possible, give your child 100% of your attention at eye level.  The connection will calm the child as he/she will feel loved, valued and important and his/her need to misbehave will decrease.
  • Beware of open-ended questions:  If it is bath time and your child has no choice in this, then stay away from "You need to take a bath, okay?"  Instead say, "It's bath time, do you want to put in the bubbles or shall I?"
Remember, even a child who feels loved and respected will create power strugles because he is human, but by using these techniques you will be able to bring abotu more cooperation and peace in your home!
