Free Vision Screenings

Thursday, August 29, 9:00-11:00am, Scripps Mende Well Being-UTC
Thousands of children's eye problems will go undiscovered this year.  Will your child's be one of them?  The first step in preventing disability due to sight loss is to detect correctable eye disorders.  If you have a child three years old or older, take advantage of these free vision screenings sponsored by the California-Hawaii Elks club.  All screening personnel are certified.  Parents of children who need further evaluation will be referred to the eye specialist of the patient's choice.  Appointment times are set for every ten minutes.  Email info@sandiegoparent.com with your requested appointment time.  This event is free for members and nonmembers but an appointment is necessary.
The new series The Wildlife Docs -- which premieres October 5 on most ABC stations during the Saturday morning Litton’s Weekend Adventure block -- goes behind the scenes with this elite team of veterinarians, technicians and trainers as they care for the more than 12,000 exotic animals that inhabit Busch Gardens.   Viewers get an up-close look at the ground-breaking medical procedures and enriching care that are just part of a day’s work for this dedicated group.

Much of the show will take place in the park’s new Animal Care Center, an innovative, 16,000-square-foot medical center that brings park guests into the animal care experience. The Animal Care Center includes a nutrition center, treatment rooms, clinical lab and viewing areas.

The 90-Minute Baby Sleep Program -
Follow Your Child's Natural Rhythms for a
Better Night and Naps

Monday, August 26, 9:30-11am
Scripps Mende Well Being-UTC
This class offers information on baby's sleep requirements and other valuable information about a baby's sleep rhythm during the first year of life.  Our speaker, Dr. Polly Moore, will discuss ways to help your baby sleep better, cry less, improve her/his learning, and more fully enjoy the world.  This event is free for Parent Connection members, $10 for nonmembers.
Your Child's IEP Conference
Tuesday, August 27, 6:30-8:00pm
Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla
Schaetzel Center - Walker Room
In this workshop, parents of children with disabilities will have the opportunity to learn how to navigate their child's IEP (Individualized Education Program).  Our speaker is a special educator with more than 14 years of experience.  The IEP starts at three years old; however, starting from birth, children have something called an IFSP (Individualized Family Support Plan) which is similar but focuses more on "family" than the individual since the child is so young.  This workshop is a culmination of the speaker's personal and professional experiences, extensive Internet research, and information taken from various sources.  It is by no means the "final word" on IEPs and IEP meetings since the IEP is an individualized custom plan to meet the unique needs of each student.
