Protected Bike Lanes are Coming to Boulder!

On June 15th, by a vote of 7-2, the Boulder City Council decided to right-size three of the four proposed streets, Folsom, Iris, and 63rd, adding protected bike lanes lanes to these corridors. You can read more about the details in the Daily Camera: “Boulder ‘right-sizing’ bike-lane project moves forward on 3 of 4 streets, Boulder Rightsizing begins Monday, or on the Community Cycles blog.
Your signatures, your emails, and your participation at the council meeting were keys to our success. 48 people spoke out in favor at Council and our friends at The League of American Bicyclists, Bicycle Colorado, Boulder Mountainbike Alliance, Boulder Transportation Connections, Boulder B-cycle, Boulder Cycle Sport, PLAN Boulder, Open Boulder and all sent letters of support. Over 1,300 people signed our petition and a special shout-out to People for Bikes who sent a terrific letter to Council and helped spread the word about our petition. City Council also received hundreds of letters in favor and many supportive letters ran in the Daily Camera.

Next Phases of the Project

The Folsom installation will begin July 13th and run through the 21st. City staff will be reporting to the City Council and Transportation Advisory Board in August and will continue with ongoing updates.

What Can You Do?

  1. Ride the lanes! They will be safe and a pleasure to ride, but make sure you use them whenever possible. Community Cycles will be posting volunteers out on the lanes to hand out candy and information about the protected lanes. (Join our volunteer team by contacting Tila at
  2. Subscribe to our Advocacy Alerts email list to get updates on the protected lanes and follow us on Facebook and Twitter.
  3. Send letters to the Daily Camera and Council supporting protected bike lanes and telling your story about Folsom, Iris & 63rd Street ( and
  4. Provide feedback at the City’s Living Labs website.
Community Cycles will be leading rides on the corridors, hosting “Pastries on the Protected Paths”, tabling on site and soliciting feedback. Stay tuned!

Ride on!

Walk & Bike Month

We had a great June, and we hope you did too!  Walk and Bike Month was full of great events, great weather, great participation. Bike to Work Day was a highlight, with more than 5,400 people registering and even more participating without registering — based on our counts, an impressive 8,000-plus rode their bikes to work on June 24!  We love the community support -- there were more than 50 breakfast stations in Boulder on Bike to Work Day, and a few were recognized regionally, including South Side Walnut Café and Hospira Boulder/ J&L Distilling at Goose Creek.
From Bike to Work Day, to Circle Boulder by Bike, to New Belgium’s Clips Tour, we’ve traversed another successful Walk & Bike Month and we’re grateful to our 50+ sponsors who helped make it happen. Thank you to all of our volunteers, every business who hosted a breakfast station, and every person who got involved in the events and activities celebrating walking and biking culture in Boulder—and to the many community groups who put on walking and biking events all month long.
Next year, we look forward to celebrating a big milestone: 40 years of Boulder’s Walk and Bike Month!

Protected Bike Lanes

WE WON! See the lead story for more information and how you can help make Boulder’s protected bike lanes a success!

Show your support for Bike Lanes on Reconstructed Canyon Roads

Fourmile Canyon Dr west of Boulder was heavily damaged during the September 2013 flood.  Prior to the flood, this road, while heavily traveled by cyclists, had no shoulders.  As part of the permanent repairs to the road, Boulder County is considering adding an uphill shoulder in two contiguous segments.

To date, Boulder County has only heard feedback but people who do not want the shoulders and has not heard from the cycling community. If you support adding shoulders to these sections of Fourmile Canyon Dr, it is imperative to speak up at the next public meeting or email
