I made the announcement a while ago, but if you missed it, we decided to rename this newsletter exactly what it is, a slew of content marketing tips. Goodbye Spark Notes*.

The Greatest Distraction on Earth: The Intractable Draw of the Celebrity Presenter

The Greatest Distraction on Earth: The Intractable Draw of the Celebrity Presenter at Dreamforce
For six years I've attended and reported at Dreamforce, never to actually become a Salesforce customer. But that doesn't appear to be a prerequisite to enjoy yourself at Dreamforce. The conference has been building a brand through varied content that's much bigger than its CRM software package.

By booking high-profile celebrities, such as former First Lady Michelle Obama, and talking about philanthropy, Salesforce has extended its content umbrella to also include the improvement of self and community, both personally and professionally.

At least that's what Salesforce wants you to believe.

Are you on board? Or do you feel with all those dazzling extras are causing you to lose focus?

This problem is not isolated to just Dreamforce. Many events, eager to grow their brand, have gone far beyond their core mission. The result is:
  • You lose sight of your primary objective.
  • You spend hours standing in line to see and hear a celebrity speak on a topic that's not relevant to your core reason for being at the conference (often to learn, network, gather leads, and increase sales).
  • You spend hours waiting in line to get cheap freebies at trade show booths.
  • Your social media engagement is focused more on the fact that you're traveling, and who you're with.
  • Since the company is paying for your travel, money no longer has the same value as it does back at the office.
  • When it's all over, and your company is thousands of dollars poorer, you say you had a great time, and you want to go back again.
Was having such a great time causing you to sacrifice on your business goals?

Stay focused.

Don't let event distractions prevent you from doing what you're supposed to do at the event.

6 Ways We're Being Rude in Social Media... and Don't Even Know It - Content Marketing Tips
In our exuberance to participate in social media, we sometimes irk our fellow users. Watch the video as it includes two of my favorite online annoyances: endless "Happy Birthdays" on Facebook (hear me out on this one) and Auto DMs on Twitter.

We Start Juicing to Dominate the Microsoft Office World Championships
Feel that you're competitive enough to go head-to-head against me in Microsoft Excel? Why don't we put it to the test at the Microsoft Office World Championships. Unfortunately, they don't have an adult division. This column sorting and computing competition is just for high school students. My co-host Michael Wolf and I discuss that and a lot more on this episode of Tear Down Show.
