Dear <<First Name>>,

In light of the tragic events at the 2013 Boston Marathon, The SF Marathon will be increasing security measures at this year's event.  We've worked closely with SFPD and the Department of Emergency Management to create a plan to ensure safety for our participants and spectators.  Please read our new policies below and plan to arrive early to the race to make sure to get to your wave start on time.  We apologize for any inconvenience, but we do promise to deliver a secure and incredible race!

1.  The Start/Finish Area on Embarcadero between Mission and Harrison will be completely enclosed and secure.  In order to enter the secure zone, all bags will be searched by security professionals.  This means all runners or supporters will be subject to search upon arrival to the Start and Finish line. Please plan for an additional 30-45 minutes to enter the area prior to your wave start time, and instruct your friends and family to arrive to the Embarcadero early to get through security to see you finish! Note: if you are not bringing baggage in or out of the secure area, you will be able to bypass the security search.

2.  Any type of container or carrier exceeding 8½-by-11-by-4 inches will not be permitted on the course.  If you plan to run with a hydration pack or carrier, it will be searched before entering the starting line and must not exceed this size requirement.

3.  The Start Line at the 2nd Half Marathon will also have increased security.  All checked bags will be searched by event security.  Additionally, bags or hydration packs exceeding 8½-by-11-by-4 inches must be checked, and will not be allowed into the starting corrals.  2nd Half Marathoners are encouraged to plan for an additional 30-45 minutes if they plan to check bags and if possible, leave baggage at home to bypass security search.

We will have ample security at both sites to check bags, but give yourself plenty of time to enter the Start Line, check your bag, and do any last minute preparations before finding your assigned wave. If you'd like to expedite your check-in process, we encourage you to only bring sweats bags if absolutely necessary.

Thank you for your cooperation and understanding.  Have a happy taper, we'll see you in just a few weeks!
