Branching Out

Dwarf Conifers

Japanese Maples

Large & Mature Specimens

Year in Review:

2014 has been an incredible year!  As the year is quickly coming to a close, we would like to thank all of you: our friends and customers who keep us loving what we do.  Reflecting on the past 12 months, I have so much else to be thankful for and proud of, both personally and professionally.   I'm ecstatic to announce my first child, Nathan Jackson Markus, who was born just before Thanksgiving.  Nathan, now 3 weeks old, and mom are doing great, though mom and I are exhausted.  While these days are filled with diapers, milk, and sleep, I'm sure the days of soil, tractors, and conifers will be here before I know it!

From the beginning to shipping large plants:

Conifer Kingdom is the 2.5 year old mail order branch of the nursery I started in the fall of 2007.   It's been a wild ride, and in just over 30 months we've expanded our offerings from less than 500 varieties to more than 1000. We are getting orders from throughout the United States and Canada, and we have shipped our first large plants on pallets to retail customers. I am happy to say that we've had no issues with large plant shipments thus far.  These early adopting customers in CA, IL, MA, MD, NC, OH, TX, VA, TN, TX, and WA have received pallets loaded with the greatest plants in the world delivered to their driveway --no longer limited by a FedEx Box.  In an effort to encourage more of you to try receiving our larger plants,  we've got an incredible - strike that - the BEST -  assortment of conifers any nursery could offer you, and to top it off, FREE truck shipping to your driveway.  See below for more details.

Saying goodbye to conifer giants and growing:

This year the conifer community lost a tremendous asset in Dennis Dodge, of Connecticut's Bethlehem Nursery who passed away on January 6, 2014.  Dennis was a friend who happened to be the best conifer collector I've ever known.  He offered the rarest plant material out of his small home-based nursery in Bethlehem, Connecticut.  Conifer Kingdom is privileged to have more than 250 varieties from Dennis Dodge's collection which we will be propagating and offering over the coming years.  These varieties are not widely available anywhere else.  In honor of his passing, we are including (for the first time) a variety which he named - the Japanese Umbrella Pine Tsai Cheng (Sciadopitys verticillata 'Tsai Cheng').  Tsai Cheng is a dwarf with oval-shaped form, incredibly tight-branching, and glossy green, flattened needles. Below is a photo of the Tsai Cheng in the Bethlehem Nursery landscape.  This is the first of an ever-expanding selection of Japanese Umbrella Pines which we will be lucky to offer, thanks to Dennis.

Along the same lines, I'm delighted to mention that CK recently purchased all of the remaining inventory from Bob and Dianne Fincham's Coenosium Gardens in Eatonville, Washington.  Dianne (who passed away in June 2013 and ran the mail order) and Bob have been friends of mine since I began acquiring plant material for the garden at my parents' home in Chicago in the late 1990's.  Bob has offered a phenomenal selection of the most rare varieties and has been responsible for personally introducing so many great ones over the last 25 years.  We are grateful to continue the legacy of the plant collections from both Coenosium Gardens and Bethlehem Nursery.  We wish Bob an incredible retirement and Mary Lou Dodge the best.

Looking ahead to 2015, you can get your orders in now for spring shipment!  We have so many awesome plants, and we love seeing them ship to your gardens. Many have limited availability, so some of the best ones are expected to sell out soon!

Wishing you a Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, and Happy New Years,

-Brent and the team at Conifer Kingdom

+ A Free Gift Plant

This pallet of plant material includes so many of the favorites I have enjoyed landscaping with (if I was lucky enough to find them for sale), as well as up-and-coming varieties. This is a selection that I am certain every gardener or plant collector would drool over. See the collage of these plants in the images above - now imagine those ever-changing in your garden. While this collection could be planted in a single area of your garden, feel free to dot them throughout your landscape. The combined age of these plants is approximately 140 years old!

The cherry on top is 15-year old, 6-7' specimen Chief Joseph Lodgepole Pine - the infamous variety which is unbelievably popular for its brilliant gold winter color. There is nothing as spectacular as this tree at your local garden center, period.  Now let's add to that an incredible assortment of more than 20 rare and special varieties, and you've a serious landscape upgrade. In addition to the Tsai Cheng Japanese Umbrella Pine, we have never before offered Acer conspicuum 'Phoenix' - one of the most difficult to propagate woody plants out there; its candy-cane bark is captivating.

This entire collection ships on a single pallet. Shipping will begin in late January and go through March.

If you wish to take advantage of this special offer but one or more of the plants is not hardy for your climate, please feel free to contact us for potential substitutions.

Substitutions restricted to climatic factors and will not be based on preference.

We will ship more specimens or smaller plants with your order at a reduced rate.

Purchase before January 1 and we'll even add a Ginkgo biloba 'Troll' on standard in a #10 container - a $349 addition as a gift.

New Plant Tags:

Let me not forget to mention the incredible plant tags that ship along with these plants.  We are beginning to work with the brand new company, plantsmap.com - they are destined to revolutionize the way we label and track plants in collections, arboreta, and gardens.  These tags have the ability to pull a tremendous amount of information about each variety using the QR codes on the label.  They are beautifully constructed, and the entire selection of plants will ship with tags which can hang from your branches so you can always go back and determine the variety.  If there is interest in these, we will begin offering our entire selection of plants with their great labels.
