Biosphere Crowdfunding – advance notice!

The Biosphere’s Nature Improvement Group is planning to start a pioneering 3-year initiative in Autumn 2019 to make the North Devon Biosphere a haven for nature to flourish. Sadly, like many other parts of Britain, much of our nature is in decline. We want to rise to David Attenborough’s and Chris Packham’s recent calls to action to help restore nature - by harnessing the power of coordinated voluntary action by communities and farmers across the Biosphere area.
The National Lottery Heritage Fund has invited us to submit an application to fund this initiative, but we first have to secure about a further £15,000 in matching funds. We plan to do this through a Crowdfunder which will be launched in early May 2019. We hope you will support this and be ready to pledge and to share the Crowdfunder link to your friends and colleagues who share your passion for our local environment.  Our Biosphere is World Class by Nature – and with your support, we can keep it that way. More details in the next newsletter, and please follow us on Facebook and Twitter to stay up to date!

The Biosphere Partnership, through Devon County as the accountable body, has been successful in its application to the Water Environment Grant for £336k to continue to deliver water quality improvement through woodland solutions for the next 2 years. Part of the programme is being delivered in North Cornwall and East Devon. The project delivers advice and small grants to landowners and assists them towards getting larger areas of planting. We will be appointing advisors soon, so if you would like or know of anyone that would like advice, don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Shark Attacks Marine Plastics

The UK’s first WasteShark was launched in Ilfracombe Harbour and will help to combat marine plastic.  Ilfracombe Harbour is a key area within the North Devon case study area of the UK SEAS project which focuses on two case study areas – North Devon and the Outer Hebrides.
The project is funded through a partnership between WWF and Sky Ocean Rescue.

PFND

A five-year strategy and action plan to rid northern Devon of single-use plastics has been agreed by members of the Plastic Free North Devon Consortium
The consortium, which was set up in April last year to combat the global problem of plastic pollution through local action, consists of representatives from a number of charities, voluntary groups and organisations.

Map our ancient trees

The Ancient Tree Inventory website makes it easier for users to search, submit or update records of ancient trees in their area. Why not have a look at some of the remarkable trees that have already been catalogued.  We are sure it will make you want to grab a camera and submit your favourite tree.

Biosphere Coordinator Andy Bell will be giving a series of talks to highlight our unique environment.  His presentations will be illustrated with photos from around the world and the Beaford Archive and will explain why our region is so important.  Follow the links below to book your place.
