The Engineers 2.1 Beta - Community Feedback

From the desk of lead designer Sandro Sammarco:

We’ve been going through the feedback for the Engineers and one thing is repeatedly brought up by lots of Beta testers: the lack of player agency in determining experimental effects for weapon upgrades.

We created experimental effects with the notion that these powerful, but rare, augmentations would be occasional treats that added spice to the upgrade crafting process. A laser that could regenerate your wingman’s shields, a railgun that used fuel for ammo, a mine that scrambled frame shift drives.

The clear and unambiguous feedback however, has been that Commanders see these effects as a means to create combat strategies, even ship roles. Locking such interesting and important tools behind chance is too disenfranchising with regards to game play. Commanders want to choose their experimental effects.

We’ve listened, and we’ve chewed over this internally, and have come to respect this opinion.

But there’s a problem. Engineers were never meant to offer mass-produced improvements – they’re mavericks, unorthodox geniuses who manage to eke out improvements almost instinctively, rather than by following set procedures. In short, these guys and gals love to experiment.

To keep this context whilst allowing Commanders to choose special effects, we’ve settled on implementing a favour system. Simply put, when an Engineer crafts an upgrade for a ship module, Commanders with enough reputation can call in a favour to choose a specific experimental effect.

Calling in favours isn’t free though. Engineers don’t appreciate being forced to repeat procedures instead of carrying out further experimentation, so calling in favours will cause Commanders to lose reputation with the Engineer, which must be regained via standard methods: crafting upgrades, and for certain Engineers, handing in exploration data, bounty claims or selling specific commodities.

We think this is a great compromise, keeping the context and theme of the Engineers whilst enabling Commanders to work towards specific ship builds. What’s even better is that this has been a collaborative effort between developers and testers, whose input we’re immensely grateful for!

This change should hopefully be coming in an update soon after Beta 2.1 ends, so get ready, Commanders!

The Engineers Release Livestream

With the launch of The Engineers on Tuesday, we wanted to celebrate with a launch livestream. We'll be inviting a number of Elite Dangerous developers to come and chat on the stream during the expected server down time on the day. Join us from 1PM BST on May 26 on our official YouTube channel.
Welcome to our weekly roundup of news stories and events in the Elite Dangerous galaxy.
Authorities in the Neits system have confirmed that a Federal organisation known as Neits Jet Life Ltd has deployed ships throughout the system, and is attacking other vessels at the slightest provocation. Meanwhile, the GR 316 Silver Universal Group, an Imperial organisation, has despatched fighters to counter the Federal offensive. Both factions have set out week-long operations to take control of the system, and have promised to reward pilots who support their campaigns.
The Diamond Frogs have announced that their campaign to bring party supplies to Skvortsov Orbital in the 63 G. Capricorni system has been enthusiastically received by the galactic community. A huge number of deliveries were made for the explorers’ gala, which will celebrate the achievements of the Distant Worlds explorers.
At a recent event at the Mars Business Society, Federal Shadow President Felicia Winters briefly addressed the hospitalisation of former Federal president Jasmina Halsey. “I hope she receives the treatment she needs,” said Winters.
The Defence Party of Nespeleve has announced that Professor Ishmael Palin’s appeal for building fabricators has been positively received by the galactic community. Large quantities of the equipment have been delivered to Wilkes Orbital over the past week for the construction of a new research outpost on Maia A 3 a. Professor Palin is expected to depart for the planet within the week.
Don Antonaci, leader of the pirate organisation Wolf 359, has called on the galaxy’s pirates to assemble for a faceoff against the Hutton Orbital Truckers and their allies. The pirate has proposed an ‘anything goes’ battle royale in the Wyrd system. The truckers’ only response to Antonaci’s challenge was: “Bring it on!”
A spokesperson for the Wyrd Raiders has announced that following the extension of its campaign for tantalum, a large influx of deliveries has been made to Gareth Edwards Park, the organisation’s base of operations. The spokesperson extended the organisation’s gratitude to those who supported the campaign.

Clash of the Titans Beta Event

It’s beta, it’s mayhem and that can mean only one thing: A Truckers vs Pirates beta blowout! A new beta only CG has gone live in the Wyrd system. Commanders will need to join one side of the conflict and hand in combat bonds in order to complete the goal. The top contributor from both sides will win a Community Assassin Prize Pack.

Then on Saturday May 21 we’re turning up the heat. The Truckers have won the last two showdowns and Don Antonaci, sworn enemy to the Truckers, has vowed to put an end to this. He has enlisted the help of some of the Galaxy’s most notorious and powerful groups.

Everyone will be meeting on one teamspeak server and it promises to be a night of fun and destruction in the beta. If you’re unable to join in you can still watch the event and support the Truckers on their multistream or join Don Antonaci’s super group of The Imperial Inquisition, The Wolves of Jonai, The Diamond frogs and East India Company in their multi stream. There will be four more Community Assassin Prize packs given away on each team so come join in!

The Battle for Neits

Authorities in the Neits system have confirmed that a Federal organisation known as Neits Jet Life Ltd has deployed ships throughout the system, and is attacking other vessels at the slightest provocation. Meanwhile, the GR 316 Silver Universal Group, an Imperial organisation, has despatched fighters to counter the Federal offensive.

Neits has long been a contentious territory due to its position between Imperial and Federal space. The system has always tried to maintain its independence, resisting both Federal and Imperial overtures, but many suspected it was only a matter of time before one of the superpowers made a grab for power.

Neither the Federation nor the Empire has made an official statement on the matter, with both Federal President Zachary Hudson and Emperor Arissa Lavigny-Duval remaining silent. But one inhabitant of the system was happy to provide an opinion on the situation:

“It’s no secret that tensions have been rising between the Feds and the Empire recently, so I guess conflict was bound to break out sooner or later. Trouble is, when the superpowers start throwing punches, there tends to be a lot of collateral damage. By the time they’re done fighting, there might not be much of Neits left.”

Both Neits Jet Life Ltd and the GR 316 Silver Universal Group have promised to reward pilots who support their campaigns. The two factions have set out week-long operations to take control of the system, which will begin on the 19th of May 3302.

Clash of the Titans – Beta Only Community Goal

Don Antonaci, leader of the pirate organisation Wolf 359, has called on the galaxy’s pirates to assemble for a faceoff against the Hutton Orbital Truckers and their allies. The pirate has proposed an ‘anything goes’ battle royale in the Wyrd system.

Minelayers, thermal weapons, torpedo boats, long-range sniper ships – Antonaci is asking participants to bring their most devastating equipment to the ice rings, and to destroy any truckers they encounter. The truckers, meanwhile, have promised to send their finest to oppose Antonaci.

The two parties have agreed that the pirates will fly Fer-De-Lances, Cobras, Vipers and Eagles, while the truckers will pilot Federal Assault Ships, Gunships, Dropships and Vultures. Pilots on both sides have been authorised to target anyone who piloting a larger vessel. Camera crews, which will be flying yellow haulers, are considered off limits.

Antonaci released the following statement:

"Despite my best efforts, these filthy truckers continue to trawl through space. We want all pilots friendly to the Don to help us teach these truckers a lesson. Bring your finest weapons, modules and upgrades, and show your support."

The truckers’ only response to Antonaci’s challenge was: “Bring it on!”

The campaign begins on the 19th of May 3302 and will run for 5 days. Pilots who support the operation will be generously reimbursed.

Comms Chatter

Gorgonaut on imgur posted this collage of images titled “Lava Planet”.

GalCop posted this recruitment video, aptly named ‘GalCop Archive Reel No. 0034’.

ChaosWulff posted a video with a complete guide to player-"friendly" piracy.
And finally CMDR Xon Draken posted this brilliantly photoshopped image on the forums, after David Braben was quoted by Sandro Sammarco on the Beta Feedback livestream.

When Sandy asked David what he should say about alien life forms in Elite Dangerous, David simply told him to say 'winter is coming'.
