Horizons Highlights

As well as Powerplay, CQC, exploration, bounty hunting, or trading in Elite Dangerous, you can now get involved with all sorts of incredible community-led events and activities. Our Commanders continue to be tenacious in the breadth and scope of their planetary landing activity, finding ways to explore the planet surfaces with imagination and gusto.

This week, XmasterIV continued the trend of racing through canyons at high speeds. Click the image below to watch the Commander show off some fancy flying skills on Aequeelg 1. The details of how you can register a best time are in the video's description.
If you find peaceful flying to be someone else's concern, then why not watch Marcin Szwarc's video of him and his fellow Commanders using a planet's crater for much more destructive purposes.
The Distant Worlds Expedition continues with waypoint four and five. Click the image below to watch the highlights video recorded by Obsidian Ant.
You can also see the Distant World Expedition's launch video right here!
Finally this week, SoyMiiC posted this stunning image to the Elite Dangerous Subreddit.

Welcome to our weekly roundup of news stories and events in the Elite: Dangerous galaxy.
The Empire has confirmed that the last remaining Emperor’s Dawn cells have been destroyed. The battle was not as one-sided as the Empire might have hoped, however, and it was only after calling in reinforcements that it was able to finally defeat the insurgents.
An unidentified Diamondback Explorer was spotted at Obsidian Orbital in the Maia system, prompting widespread speculation from the galactic community. The mysterious vessel, which bore the designation ‘S6:7’, scanned the starport before swiftly departing.
Professor Ishmael Palin has confirmed the he and his team will soon be departing for Maia b1ba, where they will establish a new research outpost dedicated to the study of the unknown artefacts.
Hundreds of pilots took part in the search for Starship One, the missing Federation ship, turning in thousands of tonnes of space-borne wreckage to Leoniceno Orbital. The debris will now be subjected to comprehensive spectral analysis to determine whether or not any of it is from Starship One.

Educating Ed Episode 11 - Outfitting Ed

What started as a joke in the latest episode of Educating Ed quickly became something that sounded like a good idea. In the coming episode of Educating Ed, the Galactic intern will be joined by various members of different communities, who will teach him how to outfit different ships for different situations. The intern might just give each ship a little spin to show off how it feels different to the previous build.

Make sure you join us on our official YouTube channel at 19:00 GMT on Thursday February 11.

The Danger Zone Episode 6 - The Producers

For episode six of the Danger Zone we're inviting two Elite Dangerous producers, Eddie Symons and Adam Woods, to take on the community in fast-paced close quarters action!

As usual, there will be paint jobs or paint job packs for those who win a match featured on the stream. So come along, and test your skills against Eddie and Adam on Tuesday night!

Make sure you join us on our official YouTube channel at 19:00 GMT on Tuesday February 9.

PAX South in Pictures

Thanks to our amazing ambassadors, streamers, community guests and everyone who came to say hi at the booth, PAX South 2016 was a huge success. C.O.N.T.R.A.I.L member, Elite Dangerous enthusiast and ambassador extraordinaire, Jose Gonzales, took hundreds of brilliant photos. You can see a few from his collection below (and a couple from returning ambassador Eric Markey), but you can see the the full album 'Pictures from an E:D Ambassador's Eye' at the original Imgur link, here.
From the desk of Executive Producer Michael Brookes:

"Hi everyone,

For this week’s dev update I will talk about some of the planned changes for missions coming with 2.1 The Engineers release. There are a lot of details to cover so I’ll go through the high level goals and the details for the first of the goals and cover the remaining details over the coming weeks. I’ll also provide more details on the other features over that time as well.

Missions are a key component of the game and we reviewed how we can make them more meaningful for gameplay, in particular how the player interacts with them and their effects on the galactic simulation. With our review we identified five key goals that we’re tackling for 2.1 The Engineers:

-          Personalisation

-          Progression

-          Variety

-          Consequences

-          Rewards

Personalisation is about reflecting the player’s presence in the world and providing persistence for their activities. We’ve already mention that mission givers will be getting faces for 2.1 The Engineers update and this forms a part of the core of this personalisation. The mission contacts will become the faces of the minor factions you deal with for mission and this will be accompanied by a new layout for the mission board to group things more effectively for dealing with the minor faction.

The new mission presentation puts these NPC characters to the forefront of missions. They are unique and have their own faces, names and status within their organisations. The type of organisation will be reflected in the tone of their communications. Their dealings with you are also influenced by your reputation with the minor faction, but also the relative differences in status between you and the character. So if you’re Elite ranked and they’re a minor flunky then they will show you the proper deference – assuming their governing organisation allows it!

Repeated dealings with a minor faction will see your own status within the minor faction improve or fall – depending on your activities. At certain points you will deal with more important members of the organisation or even sterner types if your reputation is lacking. This will also be reinforced by a new greetings message when docking to reflect your status with the station.

The mission contacts will also remember if they’ve dealt with you before. As well as providing consistency the contacts are the conduit for gaining missions and seeing the effects they have. So they will inform you if the minor faction has entered a particular state, or a state is incoming. There will also be much smarter selection of missions that tie in with the current state of affairs, there will be more details on this as part of the progression and variety goals.

As well as what is happening in local space the contacts will let you know what impact your efforts are having and so helping to communicate the galactic simulation states and trends more effectively.

As is customary with our major updates there is a swathe of fixes, tweaks and other changes. For those of you who won naming of planets and a station these will be in the 2.1 The Engineers update. We have a revised format for the options screen coming with collapsible sections for easier navigation. More huge weapons are coming and as well as the asteroid graphical fidelity improvements the star light has been fixed so that it retains its colour over distance.

I will be back next week with more details of what we have coming."

SRV Galactic Base Jumping

Elite Dangerous is a massive game, 400 billion star systems kinds of massive, so the unexpected will pop up every now and then. Explorers in ltais 2B stumbled across something unexpected, an anomaly on one of the planet surfaces. Our community, as adventurous and creative as they are, decided to make a feature of this "monolith" and arranged an event to leap over it.

Read the full details in the forum post, including how to get involved and where to go, or continue reading the post below by PeachSlices for more information:

"The start of the new season of Galactic BASE Jumping will be hosted at The Monolith, this breath taking planetary table top is a spectacular location for the start of the new season.

The Monolith is a 6 km tall table top, on a low gravity planet making ideal for SRV BASE Jumping. Altais is also close to home system, making for access for all to get involved.

The event is rated at "Moderate" therefore the categories are Best Crash, Best Trick, Best BASE Jump and Monolith BASE Jumping Champion.

Get your SRV planetside and join in!"

Community Goals Update

Greetings, Commanders, and welcome to this week’s community goals blog.

If you're looking for a goal, the breakdown below should help:

Water Purifiers for LFT 37:
Onnes Gateway, LFT 37 system – Deliver Water Purifiers to Onnes Gateway in the LFT 37 system to support the aid effort.

The Great and Powerful Osmium:
Leoniceno Orbital, Azaleach system – Deliver Osmium to Fraser Orbital in the LHS 2936 system to improve manufacturing facilities.

Protect the Miners:
Fraser Orbital, LHS 2936 system – Protect the Osmium miners, and hand in Bounty Vouchers at Fraser Orbital in the LHS 2936 system.

Freeing slaves is seen by many as a noble endeavour, but it is not without its problems – a fact not lost of the Paladin Consortium, which recently took control of the Onnes Gateway starport in LFT 37. According to system authorities, the group’s first action after occupying the station was to liberate all the imperial slaves. Unfortunately, however, the process of officially terminating the slaves’ contracts has become entangled in bureaucratic red tape, and this has put the former slaves in a difficult position, as they cannot yet legally obtain housing or employment. In light of this development, the Paladin Consortium has issued a galaxy-wide request for water purifiers to ensure the former slaves have access to basic sanitation while awaiting their ‘official’ release:

“The Paladin Consortium is spearheading a humanitarian initiative to bring essential supplied to thousands of slaves in the LFT 37 system. But we cannot do this alone, so we are turning to the galactic community for support."

The LHS 2936 Alliance Combine, a manufacturing concern based in the LHS 2936 system, has issued a galaxy-wide request for osmium. According to a company spokesperson, the rare metal will be used to create specialist alloys with which to improve the organisation’s manufacturing facilities. The organisation has promised to reward contributors with discounts at the Fraser Orbital shipyard in addition to liberal financial reimbursements. The company’s spokesperson gave a statement to the media:

“It is no secret that our share price dipped recently, but we are confident that with the requisite materials we will be able to regain our competitive edge. That’s why we’re offering generous incentives to pilots who deliver osmium to our base of operations at Fraser Orbital.”

Fly safe out in the black, Commanders!
