Basketry workshop
with Mandy Coates

Saturday 13 November 
10.30am – 4.00pm 
Suitable for all levels
(lunch not provided – refreshments only)

You will make a small rounded basket,
using traditional basket weaving techniques and
varieties of fine willow rods to give colour and contrast.
You will include a decorative handle
as the ‘finishing touch’.

All materials and tools provided.

Live Devon Stave Basket demonstration
with John Williamson

Saturday 27 November
10am – 4pm

FREE drop-in event – pop in at any time

John will demonstrate how to make a
Devon Stave Basket on-site from start to finish.
John will also talk about the techniques of
making and the practicality of making an open
Stave Baskets – exclusive to RCC.

Sunday 28 November 
11am in Gallery 2 for approx. 1 hour. 


A gallery talk about ‘Crafts heritage’
with their aim to safeguard and preserve these
traditional making skills in their local locality.

Small hanging rush basket workshop
with maker Rosie Farey

Saturday 4 December
10.30am – 4.00pm
Suitable for adults and young people aged 16+
(lunch not provided – refreshments only)

Rosie Farey will teach you the basic rush
weaving techniques such as check weave
and pairing to make a small basket on a mould.
All materials and tools provided.

Family Christmas Willow
Decoration workshop

with Juliette Hamilton

Sunday 5 December
10.30am – 12.30pm
£4 per child / £8 per adult
Suitable for adults and children aged 6+ 

Bring the whole family and have a go
at making a selection of handcrafted Christmas
decorations in willow. This workshop will definitely
get you into the Christmas spirit and further
embellish your tree at home.

will then be exhibited and run alongside the main galleries
Basketry: Rhythm, Renewal & Reinvention
exhibition throughout. 

Forces in Translation is a Royal Society and Leverhulme Trust
funded APEX research project, also supported by the
University of St Andrews, the Worshipful Company
of Basketmakers and the Basketmakers Association.
