Hello Co-op friends and fans!
Co-op and New Deal Café sign contract
It’s been an exciting couple weeks around the Co-op as we’ve now finalized the agreement with New Deal Café for the Co-op to operate the food and beverages (including beer and wine) for them. We’re delighted to now really begin to ramp up readiness to get the Café back up and running as soon as we can. Remember, though, it usually takes a long time for most businesses to go from contract to opening and we’re working hard to speed that timeline up and be open in July. So, be excited with us but also extend as much patience as you can as we try and pull off some co-op magic for our community! Many more details to follow including some more details about our food operation coming soon! If this is all news to you check out the Greenbelt News Review

Time to eat all the fruit!
It’s that time of year again, folks, eat all the fruit time! Summer fruit really is magical and there’s nothing better than biting into a juicy peach or sweet cherry or a big ol’ slice of watermelon. Fruit at the peak of the season (often coming from much closer regions than fruit the rest of the year) is just plain better and Teddy and the produce gang are pulling out all the stops.
We’ve even rearranged the department to make it even more exciting and fun to shop. Glide around the displays and you’ll get the feeling of being at an excellent farmer’s market, (and it isn’t even Sunday! Also, make sure you actually GO to the Sunday Greenbelt Farmer’s Market, too.) Can’t eat a whole melon, no sweat, our produce folks are cutting them up for you every day. OK, so let’s make your list: Cherries, Berries, Watermelon, Nectarines, Peaches, Plums, Apricots-ALL THE FRUIT!!! Summer is also bountiful on the veggie front, too though so leave room in your cart for fresh corn on the cob, as well as grill heroes like Portobella Mushrooms, Zucchini, Onions, and Squash.
Speaking of grilling
Victor has really been working hard to source some new special stuff for our Co-op over in the Meat department. As the rest of the grocery industry gets their beef from more and more centralized sources, we’re going closer to home to get what you need. J. W. Treuth is a beef supplier that works with smaller regional farms and processes and delivers the meat to local grocers like us. Early taste testers have been raving about the quality and we’re glad to be able to keep our good pricing on beef while sourcing more locally. Look for the signs indicating J. W. Treuth!
We’re also pleased to be bringing in an excellent regional poultry company called Farmer Focus. This company is an assembly of small regional farms in the Shenadoah Valley of Virginia with high standards for care of the animals and quality of the finished product. Organic, pasture access and air-chilled are three things that set this chicken apart. We’re hoping you love it and make it your chicken of choice so we can join with our other neighboring food co-ops to help support family farming in the DMV.
Wine tastings are (almost) back!
Jeremy will be happily serving you samples of wine again each Friday beginning on July 2, from 4-7 p.m. Jeremy is also available to help you find just the right wine whether it’s the one we’re sampling or another one. So come on out! You need to be 21, of course. Set calendar reminder so you never miss out.
