Hello Co-op friends and fans!

Photo: GM Dan - unmasked.Happy Birthday to us!
Did you know that there’s been a co-op grocery in Greenbelt since the ‘30s? Did you know that it went out of business? Yep, our history is an interesting one! In 1984 the original co-op grocery here in Greenbelt was going to close. A pile of your neighbors led by co-op hero Jim Cassels got together to secure financing and ensure that a community grocery store would continue in Roosevelt Center. And so Greenbelt Consumer Co-op affectionately known as Co-op opened up on June 4, 1984, as an independent co-op owned by the people of Greenbelt! Thanks to these founders, the hard work of staff and management past and present and YOU, we celebrate our 37th birthday this week! We want to celebrate with you! Come out to the ramp from 11 am-1 pm this Saturday, June 12, for a piece of birthday cake with us! We’ll be featuring small slices of chocolate cake from our friends at Dodah’s Kitchen for you! Feel free to wear a party hat or your best ‘80s look!

What's this about some kind of a new deal?
I’m beyond excited to be able to finally start to spill the beans (coffee beans?) about our planned collaboration with the New Deal Café. We’ll be operating the food and bar aspects of the New Deal while they offer the excellent award-winning music and arts programming you have come to love over the years! We’re envisioning New Deal Café as a groovy neighborhood coffeeshop/restaurant/bar offering something for everyone vegans and omnivores alike: Cool coffee drinks, smoothies, bagels, baked goods, tater tots, dinner, and more! Plus, the kitchen at New Deal will allow us to expand our Deli offerings at the Co-op, too and we’ll be able to offer an expanded variety of house-made products for you to enjoy at home, too! We’re planning a soft opening for July and looking forward to serving the community in this new and exciting way! Much more news to come on this in the coming weeks.

Feel the Pride
Photo: Pride cupcakes.June is Pride Month and we’re delighted to celebrate with our LGBTQ+ friends and neighbors. We’re going to try and have some fun little ways to show our support this month. First off, our friends at Wilma Bakes cakes will be bringing in their super cute Rainbow Pride cupcakes this Thursday, June 10, and I for one cannot wait! These cupcakes are vegan and absolutely delicious!

Father's Day and Juneteenth
June really packs in the activity! Juneteenth (June 19) is becoming an ever more important and revered celebration and recognition in this country of the end of chattel slavery and the beginning of freedom for all people in the US. (I for one think it should become a national holiday.) “It can be celebrated in a variety of ways, however, celebrations generally focus on family and community. Traditionally, African-Americans celebrate Juneteenth by having parades, cookouts, fish-frys, church services, and family reunions.” (From the PG County Parks website: History of Juneteenth | MNCPPC, MD (pgparks.com).

City of Greenbelt and some other great organizations have a whole host of activities you could get involved in showdocument (greenbeltmd.gov).

Photo: Father & Son.Father’s Day on Sunday, June 20, is a chance to recognize Fathers in our lives. My dad passed away a while back and I miss him and owe him a lot, not the least of which is the knowledge that cherries and watermelon are the best fruit (more on that in a minute). If your dad is still around, you might want to tell him you love him and maybe buy him a beer, or a treat, or go out and grill with him! Co-op can help with all of that, and we’ve got Father’s Day cards, too. And don’t forget, most dads like chocolate, too so don’t be afraid to get your dad some!

Summertime-ish and the fruit is fine
Photo: StrawberriesConsider this my regular reminder to eat produce that is in season because that’s when it’s best! Right now, the following produce is rocking pretty good: berries of all kinds, cherries (and remember, cherry season is pretty short), peaches, melons, and nectarines. We’re cutting up melons regularly these days so if you can’t finish off a whole one we have quarters just for you! I’m a big cherry fan and I suggest you have a bowl of cherries on hand all season to just snack on freely. Sweet and delicious, you can’t go wrong! I’ve been slicing strawberries a lot lately, SPRINKLING a touch of sugar on them and then pouring a nice splash of soy milk over the top. SO GOOD! What’s your favorite summer fruit?
