Hello Co-op friends and fans!
Wow! What a week! I’m delighted to officially announce the opening of the New Deal Café with the Co-op as food and beverage management! We’re beyond excited to have entered our soft launch of your new (old) favorite groovy neighborhood coffee shop and café! (And it’s not just all the caffeine that has me stoked!) Ashley and crew have done a wonderful job in getting our coffee and plant-based smoothie bar opened this past week and so far, it’s been a huge hit! Thank you to all who have come out to let us make smoothies and coffee for you and work out all our new systems. Feedback has been very positive, and kind and folks really seem to enjoy the high-quality local Zeke’s coffee and our healthy and delicious smoothies including already favorites, The Greenbelter, Blueberry Hill and my personal favorite The Oat Man!
We’ll be open the rest of this week from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. with additional baked goods and bagels and bagel sandwiches landing this weekend. If everything continues along well, we’ll add more hours over the next week and bring dinner on-line a little while after that.
If our chalkboard is out, WE’RE OPEN, SO COME ON IN we’d love to serve you in a new and awesome way!
Your patronage matters a lot!
Summer is an awesome time of year for so many reasons like the abundance of fresh local foods, grilling, swimming, and vacation but it also ends up being one of the slower times of the year for the Co-op. While we want you to spend away at the farmers market and enjoy the abundance of the garden, I also want to remind you that your patronage at the Co-op matters a lot! We appreciate all of you who make Co-op their "Number 1" grocer and we strive ever more to earn that spot. Perhaps you’ve allowed another grocer to step into the number one spot. It’s OK, it happens. But I encourage you to check that grocer for their local and cooperative ownership, their commitment to paying their staff well, and their commitment to Greenbelt. (Did you know that we recently made the $3 an hour increase instituted at the start of the pandemic a permanent pay increase?) In our case, our “soul” purpose to exist is to serve our community with a grocery store that meets their needs not to send profits off to distant parts of the globe or even into building rockets for vanity space flights. (I know that’s not the right “sole”, but it seemed appropriate.) So, anyway, you matter to us and we’re literally nothing without you and your support! Thanks for whatever portion of your pantry, fridge, or medicine cabinet we get to fill!
Welcome back wine!
We’re delighted to have our former wine expert and longtime co-oper John Mealey as he will host our weekly Friday wine tasting THIS FRIDAY, JULY 30th
ONLY! He’ll be here from 4-7 p.m. serving up some great seasonal wines that are sure to delight! We’re putting our wine tastings front and center in the Produce area so you can’t miss ‘em! Come on by try some wine and welcome back John for a night!
Find more local, find more seafood, find more fun stuff!
Our managers and buyers have really been going all out to find cool new stuff for you to enjoy, a lot of it from within just 100 or so miles! Do you have any new favorite local items? Maybe you’ve been partaking in the great new seafood items that Victor has been sourcing including great sustainable choice Blue Catfish from the Chesapeake Bay and even some great shellfish! Teddy in Produce is working on getting us wonderful local peaches soon and has been getting a wide variety of regional items as available. Ann and the Grocery team have a LOT of new local items! Look for our cute new LOCAL signs to call out these items for you. Local items are generally from smaller producers who really appreciate your support!
