MTJ Roundabout Engineering

USH 18 at Blackwood Dr. & USH 18 at STH 83

Waukesha County, WI

It’s always exciting to see our roundabout projects open, after a tremendous amount of work by so many people. These two innovative, high flow multi-lane roundabouts, ~600' apart, provided an excellent traffic solution for this challenging site located on a US Highway and a State Trunk Highway. The design included accommodations for standard large trucks and permitted oversize freight delivery trucks.

Solution Highlights
These innovative designs provide an excellent access solution to the new commercial site, while maintaining all existing business access. This two-roundabout solution includes a compact 125’ multi- lane roundabout at the STH 18/Blackwood Dr. intersection which opened in 2006. The approval of this roundabout was contingent upon replacement of the existing signal at the STH 83/STH 18 intersection, as part of WIDOT’s future plans to widen STH 83 which opened in late 2015..

Roundabouts are Good
for Business

This project illustrates how application of traffic engineering principles that utilize the unique operational characteristics of roundabouts can facilitate improved traffic flow, safety, and excellent business access. It is widely documented that business areas with good vehicular and pedestrian traffic flow and access will prosper.

MTJ Expertise
MTJ has 19 years of experience creating successful roundabout projects that incorporate the entire system and context of a corridor or intersection to provide traffic solutions to benefit all who use the roadway. Well planned and designed roundabouts can facilitate growth, without the detrimental effects and costs of roadway widening within communities and help their businesses grow.

Please contact MTJ Roundabout Engineering to find out how we may be able to assist you in solving challenging traffic planning issues for your intersections and roadways.

Upcoming Training
Mark Johnson, P.E. will be presenting training for the Educational Program Innovations Center (EPIC). The two-day course, “Roundabout Planning, Design and Implementation,” will be held May 2-3 in Mississauga, Ontario.  Course attendees will be able to determine and understand the benefits of roundabouts in our overall roadway planning process, and how to avoid mistakes of poorly planned, designed and/or constructed roundabouts.

See more information on the Epic training.

ITE Midwestern Conference Presentations
Mark Johnson, P.E. will be presenting two papers at the ITE Midwestern / Great Lakes District Joint Conference to be held June 26-28, 2016, in Chicago, IL.
The first presentation “Public Outreach & Roundabout Implementation: Overcoming Challenges”  will be held on Monday, June 27, 1:30-5 pm, The second presentation "Design Principles for Optimal Safety and Operations of Multi-lane Roundabouts" will be held on Tuesday, June 28, 3:30-5:00 pm. Please stop by and see the presentations.
