MTJ Roundabout Engineering

Exciting New Roundabouts
Opening This Fall

It is always exciting when a roundabout finally opens to the public after the dedicated effort of so many involved bringing challenging roundabout projects to fruition. MTJ Roundabout Engineering's extensive roundabout analysis, traffic planning and design experience ensures successful, well-received projects.
MTJ worked as a technical area expert on project teams led by a Prime Civil firm and/or Agency in the application of these recently opened and challenging projects:

67 Street and 30 Ave. Roundabout – Red Deer, Alberta, Canada

Working as a technical area expert on the project team MTJ Roundabout Engineering’s Mark Johnson provided the operational analysis and horizontal design, and QA/QC for the final design for what is the first high-capacity multi-lane roundabout for the City of Red Deer, Alberta. This challenging high-flow, multi-lane design includes accommodations for large and oversized trucks, while simultaneously optimizing safety for non-motorized users. Pedestrian safety was a major consideration with three high schools planned nearby which influenced the design approach to this high-flow intersection.

Key to the roundabout design, to maximize safety, was the development of horizontal geometrics that allow for seamless future capacity expansion for three different traffic horizons with minimal future construction efforts.

14 Mile Rd. and Orchard Lake Rd. Roundabout – W. Bloomfield Township, MI

The Road Commission for Oakland County (RCOC) recognized the need to make changes over 15 years ago to the intersection of 14 Mile Road and Orchard Lake Road as part of the Northwest Connector project, located in West Bloomfield Township, MI, to improve traffic flow and safety without inhibiting business access needs.  After extensive planning and significant efforts by the RCOC staff and the project team this very challenging project has come to fruition!

Working as a technical area expert on the project team MTJ provided this innovative, high-capacity, 2-3-lane hybrid and expandable roundabout design, including pedestrian facilitation analysis, and roadway connectivity for this constrained, high flow with closely spaced signalized intersections nearby. Key to this effort was roundabout operational analysis that included micro-simulation to tie in the closely spaced signals.

River and Roberts Roads Roundabout - Barrington, IL

Working as a technical area expert on the project team, MTJ provided the roundabout operational analysis and horizontal design for this challenging and constrained intersection adjacent to the Lake County Forest Preserve in Lake County, IL.

MTJ Engineering’s design experience played a pivotal role in developing the expandable roundabout design that meets both the short- and long-range traffic flows projected for this intersection, with ease of capacity expansion. This terrific website hosted by Lake County has kept the public informed about the project with construction updates.
MTJ NEWS

Exciting New MTJ Projects in U.S. & Canada
MTJ has many exciting new roundabout projects in progress around the country and in Canada, including:
interchanges in CA with partner firm Omni-Means, working with SCDOT and CALTRANS to implement fixes to old large traffic rotaries, and fixes to an old multi-lane roundabout in Avon, CO.
In addition, MTJ is working on project teams for implementations of roundabouts in downtown urban contexts such as the two system roundabouts in Portland, ME, and a corridor of four roundabouts in Brattleboro, VT.

MTJ to Present Poster at TRB Annual Meeting
Mark Johnson, P.E. will present a poster at the TRB Annual Meeting being held January 10-14, 2016, in Washington, D.C.
MTJ’s submitted paper "Optimizing Roundabout Design for Safety and Operations" was accepted for a poster session to be held Wed., Jan. 13, 2016, 8:30-10:15 am in the Convention Center, Hall E.

Johnsburg, IL Roundabout Success
Ed Hettermann, village president of Johnsburg, IL, shared the success of the Johnsburg roundabout in his newsletter. He says the results are "magnificent."
