Member Celebration - Lansing, MI
Visiting the WMAC Table

Listening to this year's speaker, Dan Mulhern
More than 650 Michigan's AmeriCorps State, VISTA, and National members came together in Lansing on November 16, 2017 for a day of training, networking, and recognition. The event, hosted by the Michigan Community Service Commission, helped prepare AmeriCorps members for their year of service and celebrate the courage of their commitment.
Tips For Surviving Your AmeriCorps Term

Are you feeling burnt out?

~Talk to your site supervisor often. Try to meet with them weekly if possible.

~Log your hours and make sure to front-load your hours!!! (Super important, even if you have a sick week).

~Make sure you complete your America Learns monthly. It’s a pain in the butt but it really helps your program.

~Reach out to your LeaderCorps member if you have any questions or concerns, or if you just need someone to talk to.

~Great stories are super cool, and they don’t have to be a fantastic story about how you saved someone’s life. They can be things like how you inspired someone to take the first steps towards their goals, how you helped further your program, or how you yourself were moved during your service!

~Allow time for yourself. Take a day if you need it.

~Use your passions and interests to guide how you go about your term. Coming up with new ideas on how to serve based on what you like to do can be very beneficial for both you and your program.

What We're Reading!

“A book is a dream you hold in your hands.”

~Unknown

 The Odyssey
By Homer
Translated by Emily Wilson

“A lean, fleet-footed translation that recaptures Homer’s “nimble gallop” and brings an ancient epic to new life.”
The Nightingale
By Kristin Hannah

“With courage, grace, and powerful insight, bestselling author Kristin Hannah captures the epic panorama of World War II and illuminates an intimate part of history seldom seen: the women's war.”

Not Without Laughter
By Langston Hughes

“This stirring coming-of-age tale unfolds in 1930s rural Kansas.”

What We're Listening To

“I think music in itself is healing. It’s an explosive expression of humanity. It’s something we are all touched by. No matter what culture we’re from, everyone loves music.” ― Billy Joel

Lorde
Melodrama
"Melodrama has been described by critics as a loose concept album that explores the theme of solitude, in the framework of a single house party with the events and moods that entail it."
Gracie & Rachel

“Orchestral pop piano-violin duo, Gracie & Rachel, crafts intricate tunes combining classical string elements with haunting, fierce vocals augmented by sparse but powerful percussion.”

Kendick Lamar
Good Kid, M.A.A.D City

Good Kid, M.A.A.D city, conceptual enough to be a rock opera, certainly uplifts the genre with its near-biblical themes: religion vs. violence, and monogamy vs. lust.  Verbally nimble, Lamar experiments with a variety of different lyrical styles. “

Dreams

"Hold fast to dreams
For if dreams die
Life is a broken-winged bird
That cannot fly.

Hold fast to dreams
For when dreams go
Life is a barren field
Frozen with snow.”

― Langston Hughes, 1902-1967
