About the Event:

Members came together to celebrate and help raise goods for our community partner, HQ - Runaway & Homeless Youth Drop-In Center!
We enjoyed an evening of learning about what HQ offers, an open discussion on different AmeriCorps programs, partnering opportunities, and more!

We even exceeded donation expectations! Members donated:

-Dozens of chapstick, haircare products, soaps/shampoos/body wash, toothbrushes & toothpaste, feminine hygiene products
-Men's & Women's underwear, shirts, sweaters, pants, boots
-8 winter coats
-3,000 condoms & 1,000 lubricants
-Gift cards & more!

Thank you to all AmeriCorps, HQ & community members who came out to help support!

Member Spotlight

Carrie Roper
Literacy Center of West Michigan

"This is technically my third service term, though I am only a part-time member this year.  I just can’t get enough of what I do!  Through AmeriCorps, I have discovered my passion for serving the community I have lived in most of my life and teaching English language to adults.  My service experience has prompted me to go back to school, and I am currently working on my Masters of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages.  I have many amazing memories from my AmeriCorps service – not one is better than the others.  My favorite part of AmeriCorps is engaging with others: those that have come and gone on my AmeriCorps team, those that are with other AmeriCorps teams, the staff I have learned so much from, and of course those that I have served/taught English to.

If I could describe my work style in one word, it would be composed.  In any situation, I try my best to be patient and seek alternative solutions and positive outcomes.  I try to be the rock that holds others together, despite whatever is happening.  Something that most people don’t know about me is that I love getting tattoos.  Though I haven’t gotten any recently because of financial reasons, I enjoy looking at tattoos and thinking about that I want to get next!"

Keep up the great work and thank you for your impact on our community, Carrie!
Tip of the Month

Tips for Not Hitting the 6-month Financial Slump on your Stipend

  • Be sure to take advantage of free tax services in your area. The amount you make on the stipend qualifies you for VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assitance) http://www.hwmuw.org/kctcc/

  • To help yourself stay on track with budgeting try these 3 apps Forbes declared as the some of the best free budgeting apps around. Dollarbird, Level Money, or Mint.

  • If you would like to look into acquiring food assistance through the Department of Health & Human Services look into making an appointment with an Enrollment Specialist at Cherry Health. They will help you navigate the MiBridges website to enroll. National Service members are entitle to this benefit if they qualify, most do.

Tight instrumentals paired with quick, punchy lyrics make this track interesting and fun- something to listen to on repeat.

Al Green

We’re throwing it back to the seductive R&B soul style of Al Green. It may be after Valentine’s Day but it’s never too late to tell someone “I’m so in love with you.”
